Great Text and Resource book

We are a homeschooling family. I homeschool through a Virtual Academy that gives me units that I need to teach my kids every year. This year Feudal Japan was on the list. After searching the internet I found a lesson plan that suggested 3 books. Since our local library did not have this one, I found a used copy here on Amazon.

I can not say how glad, I purchased this book. The section on Japan is small but is covers so much more.

Good for an Overview

The pictures and content are accurate and well done in this book but the book doesn't go into very much depth. If all you are looking for is a brief introduction to various world cultures then this book will suffice. If your goal is to dig deeper and actually learn about how each civilization lived and functioned you are likely to be disappointed.

Horrible

This is the most horrible book for teaching math I have ever seen! It is totally without any merit as a reference for the children to follow when trying to work at home and relies heavily on teachers knowing the subject and being able to teach it to ALL students. There are NO building blocks much less any explainations as to what the kids are supposed to be learning in it or how to even perform any of the requested tasks. I do not recommend this book for ANY school.

The purpose of this book is to extend and update the knowledge of the reader to more modern digital communications systems, optical fiber communications systems, terrestrial and microwave radio communications systems, satellite communications systems, and cellular and PCS telephone communications systems. The book was written so that a reader with previous knowledge in basic electronic principles and an understanding of mathematics through the fundamental concepts of calculus will have little trouble understanding the topics presented. Within the text are numerous examples that emphasize the most important concepts. Questions and problems are included at the end of each chapter. Answers to selected problems are provided at the end of the book.

Advanced Electronic Communications Systems, Fifth Edition, provides a comprehensive and modern coverage of the field of digital communications. The most important and extensive changes to this edition occur in the chapters that deal primarily with digital communications systems such as Chapters 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9. In addition, Chapter 10 is a new chapter dedicated entirely to cellular and PCS telephone systems. The major new topics and enhancements incorporated into this edition, by chapter number, are as follows:

Optical fiber communications has been moved from Chapter 10 to here. The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter have been rewritten and several new sections have been added, including sections on light sources, optical power, optical sources, and link budget. The sections on digital amplitude modulation, frequency shift keying, continuous-phase frequency shift keying, and M-ary encoding have been rewritten and a new ' section on trellis encoding has been added. This chapter is essentially the same as in the previous edition except for the addition of a new section on CCITT modem recommendations. This chapter remains essentially the same as in the previous edition. The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter, including the sections on advantages and disadvantages of digital transmission and pulse code modulation, have been rewritten and a new section on PCM line speed has been added. Also, several figures have been modified. The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter, including the sections on time-division multiplexing and T1 digital carrier systems, have been rewritten. New sections on extended superframe format and wavelength-division multiplexing have been added. The introduction has been rewritten along with parts of several other sections, including the advantages and disadvantages of microwave communications, diversity, protection switching, fading, free-space path loss, and fade margin. The introduction and several sections throughout this chapter have been rewritten, including the sections on history, satellite orbits, satellite elevation categories, satellite orbital patterns, geosynchronous satellites, antenna look angles, and footprints. New to this edition are sections on Kepler's laws, Clarke orbits, and limits of visibility. Minor modifications have been made to the introduction and several other sections throughout this chapter. Significant changes and additions have occurred in the section on satellite radio navigation and Navstar GPS. This new chapter provides a comprehensive coverage of mobile telephone systems, including analog and digital cellular telephone (AMPS), the CDMA personal communications system (PCS), and the Iridium personal communications satellite systems (PCSS). A book with lots of disappointments.

The author published two books almost at the same time, one is "Electronic Communications Systems: Fundamentals through Advanced", and the other one is this book. I did not realize that this book is a subset of the former one (from Chapter 12 to Chapter 20) until I bought one. So if you are interested in electronic communications, you don't have to buy this book. Go ahead to purchase the former one.

Title and Edition Confusion

There seems to be some communication error involved with Amazon's printed title and edition number and the actual title and edition number illustrated. I have purchased the book pictured and can tell you that the book is in fact entitled "Electronic Communications Systems Fundamentals Through Advanced, 5th Edition". It contains chapters 1 - 26 covering everything from electronic communications and modulation to SMA, microwave, cellular, fiber optics and data networking. If you previously owned the 4th edition I can tell you that some material has been added and some of the chapters have been rearranged. This is a great book for beginners and advanced comm students.

Please note that the book pictured does not have the word "Advanced" in the title. I thought that I was simply getting a newer version of the book pictured (the 5th edition is pictured), but in fact, it's a different book by the same author. I've just written Amazon Customer Service, but I thought I'd warn anyone smart enough to check these reviews :-) So word to the wise: be careful of what you buy.

Effective text for students and anyone wanting to brush up

This is a very readable and useable text for undergraduates, business students, and general readers who want to learn or brush-up on basic statistics. There is a tremendous amount of information in its 1200 pages, but it is well laid out, amply illustrated, with lots of practical work. The answers to the odd numbered questions are provided in the back to aid self-study. There are several appendices that provide important tables and the methods for calculating important statistical formulas. The index is also quite helpful.

I think the book has a good balance of the technical with the practical. It is easy on the eyes and though statistics necessitates the use of a significant amount of math, it is well explained and never overwhelms the reader.

Used in MBA program - Intro to Stats

I did not have much statistics background while in undergrad or through my job experiences and found this book to be quite easy to understand. The problems at the end of the chapters were quite useful in that they seemed applicable to the real world. I thought the most useful section was on regression so if you are interested in learning about that topic, this textbook is quite useful.

Very Suprised!

I was very weary of this book because I typically like books that are in the "modern college textbook" format, i.e. nice sentence structure, color pictures, numerous examples, etc... however this book is a little old-school. With that being said however, I learned more about the basic circuit concepts in these chapters than I did in my introductory circuit class that did have the "modern college" textbook. This book has a very interesting way of approaching circuits from a system level and you can definitely tell that the author cares about teaching the reader the art of linear system analysis on a personal level. Very good book!

WARNING:
Be sure you are getting the hardcover edition. Not only is it 2/3 smaller than it's softcover counter-part, it is also more durable. Every student that got the soft-cover edition had chunks of the book falling out half-way through the semester!

Excellent introductory testbook on network analysis

The book is "pricey" at $99.05 and that is why I rated it 4-stars instead of 5. I just started teaching a technical electronics course at ITT Technical Institute which uses this book as its main text. I was a little rusty on several topics when I realized that I was again becoming proficient as I was teaching the material with the aid of this book. The author treats each topic in a clear and concise manner. The examples he uses are relevant and an excellent choice for each topic. As a side note, most if not all electronic textbooks are full of distracting errors and this book seems to have kept them down to a minimum. I commend the author for this observance to detail. Also, he changed simulation programs from PSpice to Electronic Workbench. I can not figure out why when PSpice is sort of an "industry standard". Anyway, I have learned to use yet another simulation program. I have added this book to my special collection of technical references. J.W. Heckendorf.

Indispensable Football Drill-Book for All Positions

As a former youth football coach (I've coached from 3rd grade up thru Junior High) I can honestly say that this book has served me well as a practice-drill resource. Enough drills for every position to keep practice sessions fresh and plenty of practical techniques for targeting specific areas that might need improvement within your team. Drills are well-explained and step-by-step tactics are discussed such that even an inexperienced coach will quickly comprehend and be able to explain to their team the intent of the drill.

Every new coach should have this on their shelf.

coaching pointers

I have lots of drill books on my shelves, but this book actually gives coaching pointers for each drill. It tells you what you ought to tell the kids during the drill. This aspect of the book has been invaluable to my assistant coaches and to many of our feeder coaches in junior high, even the Pop Warner League. It not only shares an absolute wealth of drills, it emphasizes the necessary fundamentals for each player. I really think this is the best drill book on the market.

Incredibly complete

I've been coaching football for almost thirty years, and I've never seen a more complete book of football drills. This book has a minimum of 35 to 40 drills for every position on the field -- both offense and defense. It even covers agility drills and special teams. I can't imagine any football coach being without one. This one has it all!

The topics have been arranged with the assistance of faculty who teach in a variety of technical programs. However, we have also allowed for many other compatible arrangements. The topics are presented in an intuitive manner, with technical applications integrated throughout whenever possible. The large number of detailed examples and exercises is a feature that students and faculty alike find essential.

The text is written at a language level and a mathematics level that are cognizant of and beneficial to most students in technical programs. The students are assumed to have a mathematics background that includes one year of high school algebra or its equivalent and some geometry. The introductory chapters are written so that students who are deficient in some topics may also be successful. The material in this book should be completed in three or four semesters or equivalent and serves as a foundation for more advanced work in mathematics. This text is intended for use in Associate Degree programs as well as ABET (Accrediting Board for Engineering Technology) programs and BIT (Bachelor of Industrial Technology) programs.

Chapters 1 and 2 provide the basic skills that are needed early in almost any technical program. Chapters 3 through 8 complete the basic algebraic foundation, and Chapters 9 through 13 include the trigonometry necessary for the technologies. Chapters 14 through 17 include some advanced topics needed for some programs. Chapter 18 addresses the basics of statistics for process control. Chapter 19 (analytic geometry) completes a comprehensive mathematics background needed in many programs; some programs include this chapter at the end of the first year while other programs include this chapter at the beginning of the introductory calculus. Chapters 20 through 22 present intuitive discussions about the limit and develop basic techniques and applications of differentiation. Chapters 23 through 25 develop basic integration concepts, some appropriate applications, and more complicated methods of integration. Chapter 26 presents partial derivatives and double integrals. Chapters 27 through 29 provide an introduction to series and differential equations with technical applications.

We have included Appendix C on the basic graphing calculator and Appendix D on the advanced calculator so that faculty have the option of which, if any, graphing calculator is used in their course. Some graphing calculator uses are integrated into some of the examples in the text.

A companion Instructor's Manual with solutions for selected odd-numbered exercises, answers for even-numbered exercises, and sample chapter tests and answers is available. TO THE STUDENT

Purchased this book to be used for Problem Solving MAP3401class and thought it would be a good reference text. Have only used it for a few weeks, but it has been helpful as there are plenty of examples to the topic being covered.

Had to contact the seller because the item was listed as new, but did not receive a new text or the CD that was supposed to be included. However, seller worked very hard to make the transaction satisfactory. Overall, I am pleased with the product.

I would add this book to the long list of books on ECG's that did not impress me at all. It's hard to find the right book that can best explain ECG rhthyms in an easy to understand format or that has good illustrations of ECG strips. I sent this book back.
