Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???

As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!

It has a great deal to say about nothing. There is very little substantive detail on anything! Which, given it's size, really is quite amazing! This book will not teach you how to concretely implement any decision support system. It waffles on at a very distant level about such systems but never gets down in the trenches, if you know what I mean. It's basically why (though only just) rather than how! And for me, that makes this book a very pricey door jam.

Seriously, I was really underwhelmed and disappointed by the book. I ended up buying Statistics, Data Analysis and Decision Modeling by Evens and Olson (isbn: 0130783838) to find the information and practice that I need (decision modeling rather than decision support systems per se). It also comes with phstat software which is a VERY useful excel statistical add-in.

For example, from this book, p681-685 is genetic algorithms -> in 5 Pages!!!!! with nothing substantive about recombination, crossover, mutation, fitness or anythign like that (the terms are mentioned but not explained)...all it does is refer you sompleace else! Fuzzy logic gets 4 pages...with no implementation details. That is seriously ordinary!

So I suggest you save your money and look at something else. SOmehow I don't see this book giving anybody too much joy. It amazes me it has lasted through 7 edition. If the 7th is this bad...I'd hate to see the first edition!!! So, as I said before, more a book about why and where to go to get knowledge of how to do rather than giving you the know-how. SO look for a book on how! This is a book for discovering that terms like knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) actually exist...and maybe what it means (like say webopedia) but certainly not how to do it...

This book contains many empty references to other works, which indicate that the author(s) are well read, but does not help the reader at all (how many books does the author expect you to buy?). A lot of writing on each page, but little actual information. If you are looking for a book on how to actually implement a DSS, look elsewhere.

Preface

Welcome to the new and expanded edition of Human Relations: Interpersonal, Job-Oriented Skills. Success in any position involving interaction with people requires two broad sets of competencies: functional skills and generic skills. The term functional skills refers to knowledge of one's discipline (or organizational function), technical skills, specialty skills, or simply details of the job. Generic skills refers to competencies important in a variety of jobs. Among these generic skills are good work habits and time management, computer skills, high ethics, and interpersonal skills.

My purpose in writing this book is to help readers enhance their interpersonal skills in the workplace. By enhancing interpersonal skills, a person has a better chance of capitalizing upon his or her other skills. Two primary approaches are used in this text to achieve the lofty goal of improving interpersonal skills. First, basic concepts are introduced to enhance understanding of key topics in interpersonal relations in organizations.

Second, skill-building suggestions, exercises, and cases are presented that are designed to improve interpersonal skills related to the topic. Chapter 4, for example, presents general information about the nature of teamwork, followed by suggestions for improving teamwork. The chapter also includes several exercises or experiential activities and a case-all designed to improve teamwork skills. AUDIENCE FOR THE BOOK

The primary audience for this book is people taking courses that emphasize the development of interpersonal skills. Such courses typically include the term human relations. Because interpersonal relations contribute so heavily to effective leadership, the text is suited for participants in leadership and supervisory training courses. FRAMEWORK OF THE BOOK

The book is a blend of current and traditional topics dealing with interpersonal relations in organizations with a heavy component of skill development and self-assessment. The information is organized into chapters, all emphasizing interpersonal relations between two or more people. Chapter 1, "A Framework for Interpersonal Skill Development," sets the stage for improving one's interpersonal skills on the job. Chapter 2, "Understanding Individual Differences," presents information that is the foundation of effective interpersonal relations. Chapter 3, "Interpersonal Communications," deals with skills in sending and receiving messages.

Chapter 4, "Developing Teamwork Skills," sensitizes the reader to a vital set of skills in the workplace. Chapter 5, "Group Problem Solving and Decision Making," provides additional skill in collaborative effort. Chapter 6, "Cross-Cultural Relations and Diversity," is about developing cross-cultural skills in a diverse work force. Chapter 7, "Resolving Conflicts with Others," helps the reader develop skills in finding constructive solutions to differences of opinion and disputes with others.

Four consecutive chapters deal with exerting influence over others: Chapter 8, "Becoming an Effective Leader," presents information relevant to exercising leadership in the workplace; Chapter 9, "Motivating Others," emphasizes skills in getting others to work hard to achieve goals; Chapter 10, "Helping Others Develop and Grow," is about coaching, counseling, and teaching others; and Chapter 11, "Positive Political Skills," describes how to use power and influence for constructive purposes.

Chapter 12, "Customer Satisfaction Skills," describes several approaches to enhancing skills in satisfying customers, and thus lies at the heart of the quality revolution. Chapter 13, "Enhancing Ethical Behavior," translates ethical principles into usable skills. The rationale is that an ethical base is important for achieving career-long effectiveness in interpersonal relations. Chapter 14, "Personal Productivity and Stress Management," supports development of interpersonal skills in showing that productive people who have stress under control can relate more effectively to others. Chapter 15, "Job Search and Career Management Skills," includes information about the application of interpersonal skills (such as networking) to enhance one's career. CHANGES IN THE NEW EDITION

This new edition of Human Relations is expanded and enlarged, in addition to including updated information wherever appropriate. Two new chapters have been added in response to requests by users of the previous edition. Chapter 14 deals with improving productivity and managing stress, and Chapter 15 is about conducting a job search and career enhancement. Among the new topics in the text are:

The U.S. federal government guidelines recommend that postsecondary schools teach five competencies and a three-part foundation of skills and personal qualities needed for job performance. The competencies state that effective workers can productively use resources, interpersonal skills, information, systems, and technology. In addition, the foundation competence requires basic skills (such as reading, writing, and arithmetic), thinking skills (such as thinking creatively), and personal qualities (such as self-management and integrity).

Human Relations provides information and exercises that directly support components of six of the preceding eight requirements-use of resources, interpersonal skills, basic skills, personal qualities, and technology. Information and systems are ordinarily taught outside of an interpersonal skills or human relations curriculum. A guide to meeting the federal guidelines is presented next.

Included are allocating time, money, materials, space, and staff: Chapter 2, about understanding individual differences, provides background information for doing an effective job of allocating staff.

Interpersonal Skills
Examples are working on teams, teaching others, serving customers, leading, negotiating, and working well with people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Interpersonal skills are taught throughout the book, and each of the skill areas just mentioned is covered by at least one chapter. Chapter 4 is about working on teams; Chapter 10, about helping others develop, covers teaching others; Chapter 12, about customer service skills, deals with serving customers. Leading others is the subject of Chapter 8; negotiating is explained in Chapter 7, about resolving conflicts with others; and Chapter 6, about cross-cultural relations, discusses working well with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Basic Skills
These include reading, writing, arithmetic and mathematics, speaking, and listening. Chapter 3, about communicating with people, provides suggestions for improved writing, speaking, and listening.

Thinking Skills
These consist of thinking creatively, making decisions, solving problems, seeing things in the mind's eye, knowing how to learn, and reasoning. Again, this is a good practice book for homeschooling.

It has an answer key in back, just incase you need it.

The sheets have directions printed at the tops of the pages.

I like the fact that the sheets are not cluttered with pictures, but are clean and simple.

Ease for students will vary a bit for each student, but mine have found them rather enjoyable to do!

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) examination is currently used in 23 states and numerous counties/townships as the sole examination for licensure as a massage therapist. For students of massage, preparing for this examination can be overwhelming. This review text is formatted as a concise and specific review of information on the NCBTMB and other state licensing exams, compiled through years of collecting questions from new student graduates, instructors and seasoned massage therapists who have sat for and successfully completed these examinations.

The subjects covered in this review book have been developed from the outline in the NCBTMB examination booklet. Information to be covered in the following four chapters will include: The Human Body, Anatomy and Pathophysiology, Muscle Movement and Anatomy, and Massage and the Business of Massage. GREAT GUIDE

I bought this along with 4 other guides and this was easier to follow for

me. Loved the outline set up, simple and to the point and tells you

why an answer is correct.

I made flashcards of each test and just kept at it until I understood

material that I was weak in.

Usethis along with Laura Allen and Duke Cassel/Ashton book and you

will be able to pass the exam.

don't plan on using the cd

The book is really very well organized and direct- which is very helpful. There are a few mistakes in information (particularly Asian massage) but overall the book is very useful. The cd looks like a great idea- unfortunately, while is is both mac and pc compatible, it works in neither my mac or pc. Mac has updated (of course) so even if you have the "right" operating system this will not work... And while we have the indicated operating system on our pc, it will not acknowledge the cd.... And their customer service number is down. It is very pricey for such a small book with no functioning cd. But if you don't want a cd -go for it. ps. I passed my exam using this and 1 other study guide. This was the better of the two.

this story i read was cool i enjoyed it. well this story is about 2 young fighters that are best friends and have to fight in order to go to the championship. thase two young antonio cruz and felix vargas are like brothers to eachother .

if you like boxing you should read this story because it may remind you of a bestfriend.also if you like to fight and throw punches you may learn new skills like uppercut and all sorts of other kind.

This authoritative book shows students how to use the Pspice® circuit simulation program with the schematic capture front end, Capture®. It features an abundant collection of examples that demonstrate how to create a circuit, run different analyses, and obtain results from those analyses.

This manual is designed to show students how to use the PSpice circuit simulation program from Orcad with the schematic capture front end, Capture. It is a collection of examples that show students how to create a circuit, how to run the different analyses, and how to obtain the results from those analyses. This manual does not attempt to teach students circuit theory or electronics; that task is left for the main text. Instead, the manual takes the approach of showing students how to simulate many circuits found throughout the engineering curriculum. An example is the DC circuit shown below.

It is assumed that the student has been given enough information to completely analyze the circuit. This manual assumes that the student wishes to check his or her answers (or intuition) with this program. The student would construct the circuit as shown in Part 1 and then run either the node voltage analysis in Part 3 or the DC Sweep in Part 4. This circuit is different from the circuits in Parts 3 and 4, but the procedure given in those parts can be applied to the circuit.

This manual was designed to be used by students for their entire educational career and beyond. Since the parts are arranged by analysis type, they contain a range of examples from circuits covered in first-semester circuit theory courses to senior-level amplifier and switching circuits. Sections that are too advanced for beginning students may be skipped without loss of continuity. All parts contain both simple circuits and advanced circuits to illustrate the analysis types. Sections do not have to be covered sequentially. Individual examples can be identified that apply to specific courses. However, the following sequence is suggested for first-time users. All beginning users should follow Parts 1 and 2 completely to learn how to draw, print, and save schematics, and how to use Probe, the graphical post-processor, for viewing results. All students should follow some of the examples in Parts 3 and 4 that are relevant to the course and also cover a few of the examples that may apply to earlier courses (if any). The early examples in these parts have the most step-by-step detail of how to use the software.

This manual contains examples that apply to courses throughout the engineering curriculum. Introductory circuits classes usually cover DC circuits, AC circuits with phasors, and transient circuits with a single capacitor or inductor and a switch. Examples are given to cover these types of problems. After reviewing the examples in this manual, a student should be able to simulate similar problems. A typical first electronics course may cover transistor biasing, amplifier gain, and amplifier frequency response. Examples of these analyses are also given. Higher-level electronics courses would cover Monte Carlo analysis, Worst Case analysis, and distortion. Examples of these types of analyses are included.

Exercises are given at the end of each section. These exercises specify a circuit and give the simulation results. The students are encouraged to work these problems to see if they can obtain the same simulation results. The exercises are intended to give students practice in using the software, not to teach them circuits. Since this software covers such a wide variety of courses, problems are not given. These problems are best left to the instructor or main text. Using PSpice on problems specific to the class material is far more instructional than using it on problems designed to teach PSpice. My philosophy is that PSpice should be used only to verify one's own calculations or intuition. In my classes I assign problems that are worked by hand calculation, simulated with PSpice, and then tested in the lab. The students then compare the measured results to the hand calculations and PSpice simulations. Without hand calculation, it is impossible to know if the PSpice simulations are correct.

The book is written as if the instructor were giving a class demonstration on how to use the software. Intermediate windows are shown, and all mouse selections are specified. When I first started teaching the schematic capture version, I brought the students into the computer lab. I gave a lecture using an LCD projection screen and an overhead projector. The students could see the screens projected by the overhead and could follow along using their own computers. It required too much lecture time to cover the wide scope of the Orcad Lite software, so I wrote this manual using the philosophy that the screen captures presented in this manual would be the same as if I were presenting the software in a lecture.

The main advantage of the schematic capture front end of PSpice is its ease of use. At first this may not be apparent. When I first started to use Capture, I tested it with a simple three- or four-node circuit. Since I was familiar with writing netlists, it was far easier to write a simple four-line netlist than to search through the many menus of Capture and create a schematic. As I became more proficient at using the program and remembering the standard parts, I could create a schematic faster than I could type a netlist. The schematic version becomes much easier when you use parts with which you are not familiar, such as an . exponential or pulsed voltage source. How many of us can remember the order of the parameters in a pulsed voltage source? Usually you have to look them up in the manual. With Capture, a manual is not necessary. Suppose that you get a part called Vpulse. The parameters of the source are listed in the part's attributes, and the order is not needed since Capture takes care of the order automatically. Another example would be an operational amplifier. If you were describing the circuit using a netlist, you would first have to find the order and number of calling nodes of the op-amp subcircuit. To figure out the calling nodes, you have to look at the library listing that contains the netlist of the op-amp subcircuit. Since the MS-DOS operating system did not allow multitasking, this usually involved exiting PSpice and listing the library. In the schematic capture version, you only need to get the op-amp part. All nodes are shown on the schematic, and ,the correct calling order is not needed. This makes the schematic capture version far simpler to use.

Another major advantage of the schematic capture version is that students find drawing circuits .such more interesting than writing netlists. Students tend to explore the schematic capture front end much more than a text-based shell. Since all of the analyses and parts are available on-line as windows, graphics, or help files, students tend to explore the abilities of the program and they don't have to dig through a manual. In-the text-based version of PSpice, students would first come to the instructor rather than look through a manual.

There are many other advantages to using the schematic capture version. The enormous popularity of the Microsoft Windows operating system should attest to the ease of use of a graphics-based interface compared to a text-based interface. One such advantage is automatic documentation. When you simulate a circuit, you automatically have a circuit schematic. This schematic can be incorporated into lab notebooks and reports. In a corporate environment, documentation of this type is extremely important. With the Windows operating system, the schematics can be incorporated into written documents using screen captures. This manual is an example of what can be accomplished.

The version of Orcad Lite described in this manual is Version 9.2 displayed using Windows 2000. The parts libraries described in this manual have been changed slightly from Orcad's distribution libraries. New parts were added to make the program simpler for beginning students to use. Please note that the libraries contained in this manual are slightly different from the factory distribution libraries.

Schematic Capture with Cadence PSpice

Marc Herniter writes good clear PSpice books. I have three of his PSpice books (including this one).
The book is written in a clear straight forward manner. The program itself is not friendly and easy to use. Possibly, it appears unfriendly because it is complex, powerful and with many good features. The author describes and explains the complex concepts in a clear manner with good examples.
For users who are familiar with previous versions of PSpice that used Schematic to enter a circuit and start an analysis, the book provides direction on how to switch over and employ Capture.
The only reason for only 4 stars is that some of the graphics are poor quality. It is not uncommon to find black text on dark grey background which is difficul to read. Color graphics would be nice, but it may be too costly.
Anyone starting with Capture and PSpice will benefit from this book. It certainly is better than the documents provided by the program originator.

Easy to follow

If everyone writes textbooks or manuals like Marc Herniter, life would be easy for students and engineers. This book is reasonably priced. Every step in the manual is illustrated by a screen capture, so there is not much guessing involved. The author also shows a lot of tricks and different ways to do simulations which I appreciate a lot. The book is certainly easier to follow than those "Idiot's guide to..." or "...for Dummies" books.
This manual is not intended to teach people about circuit theory. Its main purpose is to teach users how to use Cadence PSpice. Users should have knowledge on electronic circuits or are taking an electronic circuit course concurrently. If you find it hard to learn PSpice from the PSpice user's guide, you should get this book instead. It really works.

Excellent users' manual

This book covers all the issues that arise in using Orcad Lite Version 9.2 in an undergraduate setting. Screen dumps show exactly how to implement the most used features. New features are described that prove very useful. Supplementary material on the author's Web site includes file exchange by e-mail, incorporation of Probe plots into Word, and the use of hierarchical blocks that can be drilled down to the underlying schematics. .
Some features, like the design cache, are not described in detail. These are new, more specialized bells and whistles of the Cadence version.
The author takes the conventional approach of showing what can be done without explaining the quirks of the new system and its drawbacks. I believe readers might very well appreciate a comparison of pros and cons of Version 8.0 or earlier vs. this new version that, along with its advantages, uses an inferior drawing package for schematics, consumes huge amounts of memory, crashes frequently, sometimes confuses projects open at the same time, and often can't locate components of projects (like the Schematic!) clearly present in the same folder as parts it does find.
Bottom line: a great place to learn the new Cadence PSpice
