About the Author

Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time he accepted a position with Penn State University, and he currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Larson is the lead author of more than two dozen mathematics textbooks that range from sixth grade through calculus levels. Many of his texts, such as the seventh edition of his calculus text, are leaders in their markets. Larson is also one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia and the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs, extending from the elementary school through calculus levels. Larson is a member of several professional groups and is a frequent speaker at national and regional mathematics meetings.

Betsy Farber received her Bachelor's degree in mathematics from Penn State University and Master's degree in mathematics from the College of New Jersey. Since 1976, she has been teaching all levels of mathematics at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she currently holds the rank of professor. She is particularly interested in developing new ways to make statistics relevant and interesting to her students, and has been teaching statistics in many different modes—with TI-83, with MINITAB, and by distance learning as well as in the traditional classroom. A member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), she is an author of The Student Edition to MINITAB and A Guide to MINITAB. She served as consulting editor for Statistics, A First Course and has written computer tutorials for the CD-ROM correlating to the texts in the Streeter Series in mathematics.

Welcome to Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World, Second Edition. We are grateful for the overwhelming acceptance and support of the First Edition. It is gratifying to know that our vision of combining theory, pedagogy, and design to exemplify how statistics is used to picture and describe the world has helped students learn about statistics and make informed decisions. This message—picturing the world—begins with the cover and is carefully integrated into every feature of the text.

New to the Second Edition

Two features in the Second Edition help students apply statistics to real-life situations and practice making decision about statistics.

Uses and Abuses. Each chapter now has a full page summarizing the uses of concepts in the chapter, as well as a description of common misuses. Each "abuse" is accompanied by one or more exercises.

Real Statistics—Real Decisions—Putting It All Together. Following the Review Exercises in each chapter, we have added a full-page real-life situation accompanied by exercises that ask students to use the concepts in the chapter to make decisions.

The exercise sets in the Second Edition include approximately 200 new exercises, giving the students more practice in performing calculations, making decisions, providing explanations, and applying results to a real-life setting.

In response to suggestions from statistics instructors, the coverage of topics in Chapters 2, 5, 7, and 9 is revised in the Second Edition.

  • In Chapter 2, the z-score is now introduced in Section 2.5, Measures of Position.
  • In Chapter 5, we added two new sections—Section 5.3, Normal Distributions: Finding Probabilities, and Section 5.4, Normal Distributions: Finding Values. These sections replace Section 5.3, Applications of Normal Distributions in the First Edition. Changing these sections allows the instructor to cover applications of normal distributions in greater detail and from two perspectives.
  • In Chapter 7, section 7.1, Introduction to Hypothesis Testing, we now introduce the concept of hypothesis testing using probability values, or P-values. The concept of using rejection regions is now introduced in Section 7.2, Hypothesis Testing for the Mean (Large Samples).
  • In Chapter 9, for instructors who prefer to cover Section 9.1, Correlation, immediately after covering graphing paired data in Chapter 2, we added a method for testing a population correlation coefficient that does not involve hypothesis testing. The method is simple and can easily be covered after Chapters 1 and 2.
General Features

Versatile Course Coverage. The table of contents of the text was developed to give instructors many options. For instance, by assigning the Extending the Basics exercises and spending time on the chapter projects, there is sufficient content to use the text in a two-semester course. More commonly, we expect the text to be used in a three-credit semester course or a four-semester course that includes a lab component. In such cases, instructors will have to pare down the text's 46 sections. If you want more information on sample syllabi, check the Web site that accompanies the text, www.prenhall.com/larson.

Choice of Tables. Our experience has shown that students find a cumulative density function (CDF) table easier to use than a "0-to-z" table. Using the CDF table to find the area under a normal curve is the topic of Section 5.2 on pages 214-218. Because we realize that many teachers prefer to use the "0-to-z" table, we have provided an alternative presentation of Section 5.2 using the "0-to-z" table in Appendix A of the book.

Graphical Approach. As with most introductory statistics texts, we begin the descriptive statistics chapter with a survey of different ways to display data graphically. A difference between this text and many others is that we continue to incorporate the graphical display of data throughout the text. For example, see the use of stem-and-leaf plots to display data on pages 348 and 349. In all, the text has over 900 graphs—surpassing all other introductory statistics texts.

Variety of Real-Life Applications. We have chosen real-life applications that are representative of the majors of the students taking introductory statistics courses. These include business, psychology, health sciences, sports, computer science, political science, and many others. Choosing meaningful applications for such a diverse audience is difficult. We wanted the applications to be authentic—but they also need to be accessible.

Data and Source Lines. The data sets in the book were chosen for interest, variety, and their ability to illustrate concepts. Most of the over 200 data sets contain actual data with source lines. The remaining data sets contain simulated data that, though not actual, are representative of real-life situations. All data sets containing 20 or more entries are available in a variety of electronic forms, including disk and Internet. In the exercise sets, the data sets that are available electronically are indicated by an icon.

Accuracy. Every effort was made to ensure the mathematical accuracy of the examples and exercise solutions. The examples and exercises were solved by two people independently. A third person compared the independent solutions and resolved differences. If you encounter errors that we missed, please contact us so that we can correct the problem in a subsequent printing.

Balanced Approach. The text strikes a balance between computation, decision making, and conceptual understanding. We have provided many Examples, Exercises, and Try It problems that go beyond mere computation. For instance, look at Exercises 31 and 32 on page 45. Students are not just asked to construct a relative frequency histogram for the given data, they are asked to go a step further and use the histogram to make a decision.

Prerequisites. Statistics contains many formulas and variables, including radicals, summation notation, Greek letters, and subscripts. So, some familiarity with algebra and evaluation of algebraic expressions is a prerequisite. Nevertheless, we have made every effort to keep algebraic manipulations to a minimum—often we display informal versions of formulas using words in place of or in addition to variables. For instance, see the definitions of midpoint and relative frequency on page 34.

Flexible Technology. Although most formulas in the book are illustrated with tabular "hand" calculations, we assume that most students who take this course have access to some form of technology tool, such as MINITAB, Excel, the TI-83, or SPSS. Because the use of technology varies widely, we have made the text flexible. It can be used in courses with no more technology than a scientific calculator—or it can be used in courses that require frequent use of sophisticated technology tools. For those who want specific instructions on particular technology tools, separate technology manuals are available to augment the text. Whatever your use of technology, we are sure that you agree with us that the goal of this course is not computation. Rather, it is to gain an understanding of the basic concepts and uses of statistics.

Page Layout. We believe that statistics is more accessible to students when it is carefully formatted on each page with a consistent open layout. This text is the first college-level statistics book to be written to design, which means that its features (Examples, Try It problems, Definitions, or Guidelines) are not split from one page to the next. Although this process requires extra planning and work in the development stage, the result is a presentation that is clean and clear.

MAA, AMATYC, NCTM Standards. This text answers the call for a student-friendly text that emphasizes the uses of statistics and not just the computation of its myriad of formulas. Our experience indicates that our job as instructors of an introductory course in statistics is not to produce statisticians but to produce informed consumers of statistical reports. For this reason, we have included many exercises that require students to provide written explanations, find patterns, and make decisions.

  • Chapter Openers. Where You're Going—The second page of the chapter opener has a feature called Where You're Going. It gives students an overview of the chapter, exploring concepts in the context of real-world settings.
  • Chapter Openers. Where You've Been—Each chapter begins with a two-page photographic t description of a real-life problem. The first page has a feature called Where You've Been. It shows students how the chapter fits into the bigger picture of statistics, by connecting it to topics learned in earlier chapters.
  • Titled Examples. Every concept in the text is clearly illustrated with one or more step-by-step examples. Each of the more than 200 examples is numbered and titled for easy reference. In presenting the examples, we used an open format with a step-by-step display that students can use as a model when solving the exercises.
  • Try Its. Each example in the text is followed by a similar problem called Try It Yourself. The answers to these problems are given in the back of the book, and the worked-out solutions are given in the Student's Solutions Manual.
  • Section Organization. Each section is organized by learning objectives. These objectives are presented in everyday language in a margin feature called What You Should Learn. The same objectives are then used as subsection titles throughout the section...

Elementary Statistics by Larson et al.

This work is geared for the above average arts or business
student. It has a good coverage of the various probability
density functions and hypothesis testing and evaluation. A typical chapter has important definitions set forth, a "Try
It Yourself" problem set, notes to the instructor, numerous
exercises and an exhaustive summary. In chapter 1, the four levels of measurement are depicted. i.e. Nominal, Ordinal,
Interval and Ratio . The author provides a simple experimental
design consisting of identifying variables, developing a
detailed plan for collecting data, actual data collection,
descriptive statistics techniques and inferential statistics.
This book could be covered in one semester with the following
organization:

with the Schaum's Outline in Statistics. Students may utilize
a statistical calculator to assist with the work of the course.

A terrible...book.

I have been forced to purchase the second edition of this book, which is similar to the first edition, but with CD rom for the data set instead of diskettes in the first edition. Also, the numbering for the problem sets have been altered, probably to make more money by making the first book obsolete.
The only reason I had to buy the book was to do the problem set. The book itself has terrible organization as a reference, where a few crutial concepts are discussed briefly, in a overwhelming mixture of examples and practice problems. Perhaps this is all well if you are trying to read the text from cover to cover, but unfortunately that won't help student learn any faster if they have to mull over unimportant details outside of the lecture.
Edward Tufte will have a field day with the barrage of unnecessary use of color and unprofessional (confusing) layout of the charts, tables and graphs (what he calls "the ducks"). The conventions used in the books are used inconsistently, and *every* page has at least three colors, which drives up the printing cost for no good reason other than profit. Furthermore, it is printed on glossy paper, where it's glare will strain the eyes and it is hard to mark with pencil. I will preach against using glossy paper for texts until someone listens!
Fortunately, the book calms down after the absolutely terrible first three chapters, but it still manages to waste pages and pages on useless information (to most) such as step-by-step instruction on how to use a TI-83 calculator - each time I open a page filled with screen shot of applications that I will never touch, I feel insulted and ripped off. Why not use the CD for these screenshots?? Doesn't TI-83 come with a user's manual???
I understand that the book strives to be a tutorial, augmenting what a poorly trained instructor may miss during a lecture, but it also tries to be a textbook which supplements a lecture. Unfortunately, the two concepts do not mix well together in a book. This is a worthless book after the lecture, and I do not intend to keep it for reference.
I have "inherited" DeVore & Peck's "Statistics: Exploration and Analysis of Data" - and found that to be more informative and engaging introduction to statistics and probability.
It is sad to hear that Larson & Farber is a popular book - it makes me shudder to think of all the high-school students out there learning the horrible examples of presentation of data. I hope that these authors will realize that insulting the readers' intelligence by diluting the content will only alienate them. I hope they fix their ways.

JOHN SHAPLEY GRAY is Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the Interactive Information Technology degree program at the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT, and principal of Gray Software Development. Gray has been actively involved with UNIX and its derivatives for over 20 years; his course on UNIX internals has become legendary amongst students and developers throughout the greater Hartford area. He is author of the best-selling Interprocess Communications in UNIX, Second Edition, and co-author of C++ Programmer's Notebook.

Preface

The topic of interprocess communication techniques is broad, challenging and dynamic. All but the most basic operating systems provide methods for processes communication. Early on, UNIX supported a number of rudimentary process communication constructs (such as lock files, signals and pipes). In the early 1980s, facilities such as message queues, semaphores, and shared memory were added to the mix by AT&T with its release of UNIX System V. Somewhat concurrently, the Berkeley Software Distribution added support for Internet protocols (4.3BSD) and the socket interface as a communication construct. By the mid-1990s, threads and multithreaded programming techniques were making significant, permanent inroads into the UNIX mainstream.

Along the way, UNIX spawned innumerable UNIX-like operating systems. One such operating system was MINIX. MINIX, written by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, is a small (about twelve thousand lines) PC version of UNIX. MINIX was presented as a pedagogical tool to permit the user to gain a better understanding of the inner working of a UNIX-like operating system. As all of the operating system source code was provided, the user could tinker with the code and refine its functionality. As a university student, Linus Torvalds' exposure to MINIX led him to develop a more robust UNIX-like operating system called Linux. In brief, Linux is a freely distributed hybrid version of UNIX. Linux system administration is BSD-like while its programming environment has a definite AT&T flavor. A number of commercial versions of Linux populate the market. These versions bundle Linux with a variety of other operating system related utilities and software packages. One of the more widely distributed commercial versions is Red Hat Linux. Red Hat Linux includes Richard Stallman's GNU project C (gcc) and C++ (g++) compilers.

This text explores the intricacies of interprocess communications as supported by Red Hat Linux version 7.3 and 8.0. It is assumed that the reader has a working knowledge of C/C++ programming. It is further assumed that while not being an expert, the reader has worked in a UNIX type environment and is reasonably familiar with generating and editing text using an editor such as vi or pico (available from the University of Washington). This text makes extensive references to specific system calls and predefined library functions. The reader is encouraged to read the manual pages for each system call/library function as it is encountered. As in UNIX, the manual pages in Linux are an unparalleled source of information. Appendix A covers the format and use of manual pages.

All programming references and examples were generated on a PC Pentium-based platform running Red Hat Linux 7.3, using the GNU C/C++ compiler version 2.96. With the release of Red Hat Linux 8.0 and GNU 3.2 the examples were revisited and tweaked where necessary. Many of the examples and most of the exercises have also been compiled and run in a Solaris 2.8 setting using GNU 2.95. Most often, few if any modifications were needed to generate clean, executable code in this alternate environment.

Each example is a complete standalone program. Command line examples, except where noted, are Korn shell based. In any setting, IPC (interprocess communication) support must be available for the user to pursue the materials covered in the chapters on semaphores, message queues, and shared memory. When Linux is installed, usually IPC support is enabled (check the /proc directory for the presence of the sysvipc directory). If it is not present you may need to modify system configuration files and recompile the kernel. There are a number of places that one can peruse for information on how this might be done. One source of information is the Configure.help file that resides in the /usr/src/linuxXXXX/Documentation subdirectory (where XXXX is the version of Linux). However, unless you are the system administrator, you most likely will want to seek help when doing this. To work with threads, a POSIX compliant thread library (such as LinuxThreads) must be available. Fortunately, most new versions of Linux come with thread libraries that are distributed with the GNU compiler (check the /usr/lib directory for files names containing pthread, e.g., libpthread.a or libpthread.so).

Great for Beginners!

This book is an excellent introductory book for beginners simply because the author is extremely eloquent in explaining the nooks and crannies. The minor details expressed in-between the core topics covered actually serves to enhance your knowlege of how the OS works. I am taking a class in Advanced Unix Programming and find that by reading ahead of the lectures, I am always fully prepared to answer almost all the questions fielded by the professor, as well as the students. It is pleasantly surprising that most of the questions asked by the students relate to the little minor details that the author slipped in between the paragraphs. My compliments to the author for the brilliant foresight.
I also have the Stevens series. Although the series is well known as the bible of network programming, I feel that this book helps brave a newbie for the more complex and drier narrrative in the Stevens series. Do buy this book if you are a beginner and have no idea where to start. Don't buy this book if you are already familiar with Unix programming and are looking to cover more in-depth material.

Great book on IPC topics for intermediate level

This book covers local IPC(pipes,lock files, locking files, semaphores,message queues and shared memory) and remote IPC(RPC, network sockets). It uses EXTENSIVE demo code to explain the concept which really helps you to master the design. This is a great book for both beginners and inter-mediate *nix programmers.

Therefore, the entry level laboratory practitioner must be cognizant of the financial, personnel, operational, and marketing issues affecting the laboratory in order to successfully perform and compete in this continuously changing environment.

Principles of Clinical Laboratory Management: A Study Guide and Workbook was designed to allow the learner to develop basic management competencies through a variety of learning experiences. The book can be used in a classroom situation or as a self-tutorial instructional manual. Each chapter is divided as follows:

  • Objectives: competencies that should be attained upon completion of each chapter. The objectives are leveled (1,11, and III) as a guide to the learner regarding the depth of comprehension that should be attained. Level I indicates an ability to recall the material, Level 11 indicates the ability to apply the material, and Level III indicates the ability to solve problems in new situations.
  • Topic Summary: a brief introductory narrative regarding the topic. Selected terms and phrases are in bold-faced type to emphasize a concept. Subheadings are used as appropriate based on the chapter topic. The learner may gain more information regarding the topic by reviewing the bibliography and internet sources as well as other management materials.
  • Bibliography: suggested readings to enhance knowledge regarding the topic.
  • Internet Resources: resources available on the Web. Although the authors have found these sites to be helpful, the authors do not endorse any site.

Well It's alright, but not quite what I was looking for. This would actually (despite the misleading title) be a great intro for under-graduates for those areas that my uni didn't teach.
Things like ethics, problem solving, proffesionalism, and writing resume's, all the way up to epidemiology, quality control and proffessional writing are covered, albeit briefly (the average chapter is two to three pages long). This book, as I said previously, would be a good primer for new graduates in what to expect from a workplace other than all the technical why's and where-for's that have been jammed into their heads by theoretical lecturers.
Unfortunately not a good resource for someone looking to improve their knowledge base when going for a promotion, and definitely not for those of you freshly promoted and foundering in a sea of paperwork and qc.

The seller is excellent--product was in great condition and arrived quickly. The book itself is less than desirable. The book is badly written, and the answers to the questions at the end of each chapter can hardly be answered using the information within the chapters.

Bought this book for an online class

I bought this book for an online class and I am not sure I like it too much. It is a good book with short chapters, but a lot of the things that my instructor expects out of us isn't really in the book. It doesn't offer great definitions and I feel like it leaves a lot to be desired. As soon as I am done with this class I will be selling it back. I am not adding this to my collection of textbooks.

The worst communication Ever

The seller refused to accept a return, even when I told him that this solution manual is not exactly what I need, cause it just gives answer to odd problems, and I have those answers at the end of my book. I never saw a solution Manaual which has only answers of chapter odd problems.

I am assuming that he owned a little press, and in order to make money he rip people off.

About the Author

ANSEL C. UGURAL, Ph.D., is Research Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has held various faculty and administrative positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and he taught at the University of Wisconsin. Ugural has considerable industrial experience in both full-time and consulting capacities. A member of several professional societies, he is the author of the books Mechanics of Materials, Stresses in Plates and Shells, and Mechanical Design: An Integrated Approach.

 

SAUL K. FENSTER, Ph.D., is Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he served as a president for over two decades. In addition to experience in industry, he has held varied positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University and taught at the City University of New York. Fenster, a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society for Engineering Education, is co-author of a text on mechanics.

Preface to the Fourth EditionIntroduction

This text is a development of classroom notes prepared in connection with advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in elasticity and the mechanics of solids. It is designed to satisfy the requirements of courses subsequent to an elementary treatment of the strength of materials. In addition to its applicability to aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering and to engineering mechanics curricula, the authors have endeavored to make the text useful to practicing engineers. Emphasis is given to numerical techniques (which lend themselves to computerization) in the solution of problems resisting analytical treatment. The stress placed on numerical solutions is not intended to deny the value of classical analysis, which is given a rather full treatment. It instead attempts to fill what the authors believe to be a void in the world of textbooks.

An effort has been made to present a balance between the theory necessary to gain insight into the mechanics, but which can often offer no more than crude approximations to real problems because of simplifications related to geometry and conditions of loading, and numerical solutions, which are so useful in presenting stress analysis in a more realistic setting. The authors have thus attempted to emphasize those aspects of theory and application that prepare a student for more advanced study or for professional practice in design and analysis.

The theory of elasticity plays three important roles in the text: It provides exact solutions where the configurations of loading and boundary are relatively simple; it provides a check on the limitations of the mechanics of materials approach; and it serves as the basis of approximate solutions employing numerical analysis.

To make the text as clear as possible, attention is given to the presentation of the fundamentals of the mechanics of materials. The physical significance of the solutions and practical applications are given emphasis. The authors have made a special effort to illustrate important principles and applications with numerical examples. Consistent with announced national policy, problems are included in the text in which the physical quantities are expressed in the International System of Units (SI). All important quantities are defined in both SI and U.S. Customary System of units. A sign convention, consistent with vector mechanics, is employed throughout for loads, internal forces, and stresses. This convention conforms to that used in most classical strength of materials and elasticity texts, as well as to that most often employed in the numerical analysis of complex structures.Text Arrangement

Because of the extensive subdivision into a variety of topics and the employment of alternative methods of analysis, the text should provide flexibility in the choice of assignments to cover courses of varying length and content. Most chapters are substantially self-contained. Hence, the order of presentation can be smoothly altered to meet an instructor's preference. It is suggested, however, that Chapters 1 and 2, which address the analysis of basic concepts, should be studied first. The emphasis placed on the treatment of two-dimensional problems in elasticity (Chapter 3) may differ according to the scope of the course.

This fourth edition of Advanced Strength and Applied Elasticity seeks to preserve the objectives and emphases of the previous editions. Every effort has been made to provide a more complete and current text through the inclusion of new material dealing with the fundamental principles of stress analysis: failure criteria; fracture mechanics; compound cylinders; numerical methods; energy and variational methods; buckling of stepped columns; and common shell types. The entire text has been reexamined and many improvements have been made throughout by a process of elimination and rearrangement. Some sections have been expanded to improve on previous expositions.

The references, provided as an aid to the student who wishes to pursue further certain aspects of a subject, have been updated and identified at the end of the text. I have resisted the temptation to increase the material covered except where absolutely necessary. However, it was considered desirable to add a number of illustrative examples and a large number of problems important in engineering practice and design. Most changes in subject-matter coverage were prompted by the suggestions of faculty familiar with earlier editions.

As before, it is hoped that I have maintained clarity of presentation, simplicity as the subject permits, unpretentious depth, an effort to encourage intuitive understanding, and a shunning of the irrelevant. In this context, as throughout, emphasis is placed on the use of fundamentals in order to build student understanding and an ability to solve the more complex problems.Supplement

The book is accompanied by a Solutions Manual available to instructors. It features complete solutions to all problems in the text. Answers to selected problems are given at the end of the book.

One of the worst textbooks I have used

I'm a student in mechanical engineering, and I recently took a class called Advanced Mechanics of Materials. Unfortunately, this book was the required textbook for the course. I know that a lot of text books can be considered "bad", but this is by far the worst textbook I have ever used.

Ideally a textbook will explain concepts well and give relevant examples to reinforce the concepts. The textbook does neither. This textbook explains concepts extremely poorly which makes it bad enough. On top of that, moreover, this book does not give examples for 90% of the concepts.

If this book is the required text for a course, I would recommend changing classes. If you're looking for a book on advanced mechanics of materials, this is NOT a good book to consider. I would have given this book zero stars if that had been an option.

Not a great book on its own.

I found myself reviewing the details of other books checked out from the library (Timoshenko 1956, Seely and Smith 1952, Boresi 2003, and Hibbeler 2003) often hidden in this text just to do the exercise. Furthermore, a lot of examples were the same as those from other textbooks but with much less clarity here. The diagrams were often confusing and the details showing the development of the theory were often highly masked or left out completely. On a positive note (if there is actually one), the book will probably be used later for reference, because, after struggling through the minute details and solving the problems posed here, I have a better understanding of the principles, but definitely NOT because of this book or the professor who used it almost exclusively to teach the course!

The book itself is well-written, however I have found errors on CD

While the book is very readable as a whole, I have found a couple of errors with the book's accompanying CD which has practice questions on it. My instructors confirmed that the answers they said were correct were in fact wrong, and it could be proven by the text itself. If you don't care about the CD the book comes with, then you should be fine, but if you're like me and like to test yourself on what you have read, you will be disappointed by the CD. (I am going to write to the editors about those mistakes so hopefully it will be fixed on future editions.)

should you get this used?

The other students in my class got the next edition, and there are some changes that make this one outdated. However, I am getting by and paid only a fraction for my books of what the other students paid. If you are intellectually resourceful, it may be worth your money to buy this edition used. If you are financially resourceful, it may be worth your time to buy the current edition.

Very good book!

This book was required my first semester of nursing school and I think it was very well thought out and written. I especially loved the tables used throughout the book to help in studying for exams. I hope my school continues to have it on their required book list.
