About the Author

THEODORE S. RAPPAPORT is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas, and director of the Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG.org). In 1990, he founded the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG) at Virginia Tech, one of the first university research and educational programs for the wireless communications field. He is the editor or co-editor of four other books on the topic of wireless communications, based on his teaching and research activities at MPRG.

Preface

The second edition of this text has been written to initiate the newcomer to wireless personal communications, one of the fastest growing fields in the engineering world. Technical concepts which are at the core of design, implementation, research, and invention of wireless communication systems are presented in an order that is conducive to understanding general concepts, as well as those specific to current and evolving wireless communication systems and standards. This text is based upon my experiences as an educator, researcher, technical trainer, and consultant, and continues to be modeled from an academic course first developed for electrical engineering students in 1990, when there were fewer than five million cellular subscribers worldwide. As we begin the 21st century, more than 600 million people, about 10% of the worldÕs population, pay a monthly subscription for wireless telephone service, and this figure will approach 50% by the end of the first decade of the 21st century.

This text continues to evolve, and has been modified and updated since its first edition, making it a useful book for practicing engineers, as well as for researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The text has been prepared to provide fundamental treatment about many practical and theoretical concepts that form the basis of wireless communications, and has been designed for easy but thorough treatment of vital material that all wireless practitioners must be comfortable with. I have tried to emphasize the technical concepts with worked example problems, and numerous, carefully crafted homework problems at the end of each chapter that are based on real-world industry issues. The second edition contains dozens of new homework problems and examples, as well as up-to-the minute technical details of the many emerging wireless standards throughout the world, making this book particularly useful for industry short-courses or state-of-the-art academic classroom use.

References to journal articles are used liberally throughout this text to enable the interested reader to delve into additional reading that is always required to master any field. To support newcomers to the wireless field, and at the request of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), I have also prepared a low-cost two volume compendium of many of the original journal articles that first taught the fundamentals that are now used throughout the wireless industryÑthis compendium series is a useful, but not required, supplement to this text. Whether you intend to use this book for individual study, or for classroom use, or for use as a handbook, this text has been written as a complete, self-contained teaching and reference book. The numerous examples and problems found throughout the text have been provided to help the reader solidify the material.

This book has been designed for the student or practicing engineer who is already familiar with technical concepts such as probability, communication theory, and basic electromagnetics. However, like the wireless communications industry itself, this book combines material from many different technical disciplines, so it is unlikely that any one person will have had introductory courses for all of the topics covered. To accommodate a wide range of backgrounds, important concepts throughout the text are developed from first principles, so that readers learn the foundations of wireless communications. This approach makes it possible to use this book as a handbook or as a useful teaching tool in a classroom setting.

The material and chapter sequence in this text have been adapted from an entry-level graduate course which I first taught in 1991 at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Chapter 1 demonstrates the historic evolution of the wireless communications industry, and the evolution of wireless systems from first generation analog to second generation (2G) digital systems. Chapter 1 also documents the rapid early growth of cellular radio throughout the world and provides a state of the industry in the mid 1990s. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the major modern wireless communication systems of the 21 st century, such as third generation (3G), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), Local Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS), and Bluetooth. Chapter 2 causes the reader to see how wireless networks are beginning to penetrate our daily lives for data and multimedia applications, as well as voice service. Chapter 3 covers fundamental cellular radio concepts such as frequency reuse and handoff, which are at the core of providing wireless communication service to subscribers on the move using limited radio spectrum. Chapter 3 also demonstrates the principal of trunking efficiency, and how trunking and interference issues between mobiles and base stations combine to affect the overall capacity of cellular systems. Chapter 4 presents radio propagation path loss, link-budgets, and log-normal shadowing, and describes different ways to model and predict the large-scale effects of radio propagation in many operating environments. Chapter 5 covers small-scale propagation effects such as fading, time delay spread, and Doppler spread, and describes how to measure and model the impact that signal bandwidth and motion have on the instantaneous received signal through the multipath channel. Radio wave propagation has historically been the most difficult problem to analyze and design for, since unlike a wired communication system which has a constant, stationary transmission channel (i.e., a wired path), radio channels are random and undergo shadowing and multipath fading, particularly when one of the terminals is in motion. New material in Chapter 5 also teaches a fundamental and new way of modeling spatial-temporal channels, which is vital for the development of smart antennas and position location systems.

Chapter 6 provides extensive coverage of the most common analog and digital modulation techniques used in wireless communications and demonstrates tradeoffs that must be made in selecting a modulation method. Issues such as receiver complexity, modulation and demodulation implementation, bit error rate analysis for fading channels, and spectral occupancy are presented. Channel coding, adaptive equalization, and antenna diversity concepts are presented in Chapter 7. In portable radio systems where people communicate while walking or driving, these methods may be used individually or in tandem to improve the quality (that is, reduce the bit error rate) of digital mobile radio communications in the presence of fading and noise.

Chapter 8 provides an introduction to speech coding. In the past decade, there has been remarkable progress in decreasing the needed data rate of high quality digitized speech, which enables wireless system designers to match end-user services to network architectures. Principles which have driven the development of adaptive pulse code modulation and linear predictive coding techniques are presented, and how these techniques are used to evaluate speech quality in existing and proposed cellular, cordless, and personal communication systems are discussed. Chapter 9 introduces time, frequency, and code division multiple access, as well as more recent multiple access techniques such as packet reservation and space division multiple access. Chapter 9 also describes how each access method can accommodate a large number of mobile users and demonstrates how multiple access impacts capacity and the network infrastructure of a cellular system. Chapter 10 describes networking considerations for wide area wireless communication systems, and presents practical networking approaches that are in use or have been proposed for future wireless systems. Chapter 11 unites all of the material from the first nine chapters by describing and comparing the major existing second generation (2G) cellular, cord-ess, and personal communication systems throughout the world. The tradeoffs made in the design and implementation of wireless personal communications systems are illuminated in this final chapter. The compilation of the major wireless standards makes Chapter 11 particularly useful as a single source of information for a wide range of wireless systems that are commercially deployed today.

Appendices which cover trunking theory, noise figure, noise calculations, and the Gaussian approximation for spread spectrum code division systems provide details for those interested in solving many practical wireless communications problems. The appendices also include hundreds of mathematical formulas and identities for general engineering work. I have attempted to place numerous useful items in the appendices, so that this text may be easily used by students or practicing engineers to solve a wide range of problems that may be outside the scope of the immediate text.

For industry use, Chapters 1Ð5, 9, and 11 will benefit working engineers in the cellular/PCS system design and radio frequency (RF) deployment, operations, and maintenance areas. Chapters 1, 2, 6Ð8, and 11 are tailored for modem designers and digital signal processing (DSP) engineers new to wireless. Chapters 1, 2, 10, and 11 should have broad appeal to network operators and managers, business and legal professionals, as well as working engineers.

To use this text at the undergraduate level, the instructor may wish to concentrate on Chapters 1Ð6, or Chapters 1Ð5, and 9, leaving the other chapters for treatment in a second semester undergraduate course or a graduate level course. Alternatively, traditional undergraduate courses on communications or network theory may find in Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 10 useful material that can be inserted easily into the standard curriculum. In using this text at the graduate level, I have been successful in covering most of the material in Chapters 1Ð6 and 10 during a standard half-year semester and Chapters 7Ð11 in a follow-on graduate course. In Chapters 2, 10, and 11, I have attempted to cover important but rarely compiled information on practical network implementations and worldwide standards.

Good overview, in need of an update

Wireless communications is an extremely broad topic, and the approach of this book is to scratch the surface of many facets of wireless communications. The information is presented in a way that can be easily understood by anybody approaching the topic from a systems level. The author skips the derivations and dense technical detail, but does a decent job of citing references for most equations.

At 11 years old (writing this review in 09/2013), this book is in dire need of a third edition. Not that GSM and IS-95 are going anywhere, but many great advancements have been made in wireless communications which deserve a more thorough treatment. When this book was written, techniques such as MIMO, OFDM, and iterative channel codes were esoteric concepts that were rarely used in practical applications, and they are now pervasive in recent wireless standards. Many technical books are timeless, but this book is not. The author's effort to write about current wireless trends and emerging technologies is commendable, but it put his work at risk of becoming obsolete.

A third edition with detail on OFDM and MIMO and perhaps a chapter on WiMAX and LTE would be much more appropriate for today's wireless engineers.

If I had not seen the Gorden Stuber book I would have given this book only 1 star. However in comparison, it does deserve at least 2.
This book has all the stuff you would want in a wireless text book. It covers fading, Rayleigh, Rician, GSM, AMPS etc. My major complaint with the book is THERE ARE NO EXAMPLES. Per chapter there are probably 3 or 4 examples, but none of them are really challenging.
For instance in the fading chapter, the examples are on coherence time only. How about a couple examples that actually use the fading PDF's/CDF's. We spend so much time "discussing" the distributions, maybe it is time we actually use the distributions?
Compared to "Principles of Mobile Communication" the book is marginally better. For one it is not as heavy on the math, and it does a better job explaining pretty well everything.
However.. I feel I learned far more from Shankar's wireless book in undergrad.

About the Author

Dr. James M. Rubenstein received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. His dissertation on French urban planning was later developed into a book entitled The French New Towns (Johns Hopkins University Press). In 1976 he joined the faculty at Miami University, where he is currently Professor of Geography and Chair of the Department of Geography. Besides teaching courses on Urban and Human Geography and writing textbooks, Dr. Rubenstein also conducts research in the automotive industry and has published two books on the subject entitled The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge) and Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press). Originally from Baltimore, he is an avid Orioles fan. Stormy, a lab-pointer mix, takes Dr. Rubenstein for a long walk in the woods every day.

What is geography? Geography is the study of where things are located on Earth's surface and the reasons for the location. The word geography, invented by the ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes, is based on two Greek words. Geo means "Earth," and graphy means "to write." Geographers ask two simple questions: where and why. Where are people and activities located across Earth's surface? Why are they located in particular places?

Geography as a Social Science

Recent world events lend a sense of urgency to geographic inquiry. Geography's spatial perspectives help to relate economic change in Africa, the Middle East, and other regions to the distributions of cultural features such as languages and religions, demographic patterns such as population growth and migration, and natural resources such as energy and food supply.

Does the world face an overpopulation crisis? Geographers study population problems by comparing the arrangements of human organizations and natural resources across Earth. Given these spatial distributions, geographers conclude that some locations may have more people than can be provided for, whereas other places may be underpopulated.

Similarly, geographers examine the prospects for an energy crisis by relating the distribution of energy sources and consumption. Geographers find that the users of energy are located in places with different social, economic, and political institutions than the producers of energy. Geographers seek first to describe the distribution of features such as the production and consumption of energy, and then to explain the relationships between these distributions and other human and physical phenomena.

The main purpose of this book is to introduce students to the study of geography as a social science by emphasizing the relevance of geographic concepts to human problems. It is intended for use in college-level introductory human or cultural geography courses. The book is written for students who have not previously taken a college-level geography course and have had little, if any, geography in high school.

Divisions within Geography

Because geography is a broad subject, some specialization is inevitable. At the same time, one of geography's strengths is its diversity of approach. Rather than being forced to adhere rigorously to established disciplinary laws, geographers can combine a variety of methods and approaches. This tradition stimulates innovative thinking, although students who are looking for a series of ironclad laws to memorize may be disappointed.

Human vs. Physical Geography. Geography is both a physical and a social science. When geography concentrates on the distribution of physical features, such as climate, soil, and vegetation, it is a natural science. When it studies cultural features, such as language, industry, and cities, geography is a social science. This division is reflected in some colleges, where physical geography courses may carry natural science credit and human and cultural geography courses social science credit.

While this book is concerned with geography from a social science perspective, one of the distinctive features of geography is its use of natural science concepts to help understand human behavior. The distinction between physical and human geography reflects differences in emphasis, not an absolute separation.

Topical vs. Regional Approach. Geographers face a choice between a topical and a regional approach. The topical approach, which is used in this book, starts by identifying a set of important cultural issues to be studied, such as population growth, political disputes, and economic restructuring. Geographers using the topical approach examine the location of different aspects of the topic, the reasons for the observed pattern, and the significance of the distribution.

The alternative approach is regional. Regional geographers start by selecting a portion of Earth and studying the environment, people, and activities within the area. The regional geography approach is used in courses on Europe, Africa, Asia, and other areas of the world. Although this book is organized by topics, geography students should be aware of the location of places in the world. A separate index section lists the book's maps by location. One indispensable aid in the study of regions is an atlas, which can also be used to find unfamiliar places that may pop up in the news. Partly for this reason, the publisher has chosen to offer an atlas to accompany this textbook at no additional cost to the student.

Descriptive vs. Systematic Method. Whether using a topical or a regional approach, geographers can select either a descriptive or a systematic method. Again, the distinction is one of emphasis, not an absolute separation. The descriptive method emphasizes the collection of a variety of details about a particular location. This method has been used primarily by regional geographers to illustrate the uniqueness of a particular location on Earth's surface. The systematic method emphasizes the identification of several basic theories or techniques developed by geographers to explain the distribution of activities.

This book uses both the descriptive and systematic methods because total dependence on either approach is unsatisfactory. An entirely descriptive book would contain a large collection of individual examples not organized into a unified structure. A completely systematic approach suffers because some of the theories and techniques are so abstract that they lack meaning for the student. Geographers who depend only on the systematic approach may have difficulty explaining important contemporary issues.

Features

This book is sensitive to the study needs of students. Each chapter is clearly structured to help students understand the material and effectively review from the book.

Outline. The book discusses the following main topics:

  • What basic concepts do geographers use? Chapter 1 provides an introduction to ways that geographers think about the world. Geographers employ several concepts to describe the distribution of people and activities across Earth, to explain reasons underlying the observed distribution, and to understand the significance of the arrangements.
  • Where are people located in the world? Chapters 2 and 3 examine the distribution and growth of the world's population, as well as the movement of people from one place to another. Why do some places on Earth contain large numbers of people or attract newcomers while other places are sparsely inhabited?
  • How are different cultural groups distributed? Chapters 4 through 8 analyze the distribution of different cultural traits and beliefs and the problems that result from those spatial patterns. Important cultural traits discussed in Chapter 4 include food, clothing, shelter, and leisure activities. Chapters 5 through 7 examine three main elements of cultural identity: language, religion, and ethnicity. Chapter 8 looks at political problems that arise from cultural diversity.: Geographers look for similarities and differences in the cultural features at different places, the reason for their distribution, and the importance of these differences for world peace.
  • How do people earn a living in different parts of the world? Human survival depends on acquit an adequate food supply. One of the most significant distinctions in the world is whether people produce their food directly from the land or buy it with money earned by performing other types of work. Chapter 9 through 12 look at the three main ways of earning a living: agriculture, manufacturing, and services,. Chapter 13 discusses cities, the centers for economic as well as cultural activities.
  • What issues result from using. Earth's resources? The final chapter is devoted to a study of three issues related to the use of Earth's natural resources: energy„ pollution, and food supply. Geographers recognize that cultural problems result from the depletion, destruction, and inefficient use of the world's natural resources.

Chapter Organization. To help the student use the material in this book, each chapter is organized with these study aids:

  • Case Study. Each chapter opens with a case study that illustrates some of the key concepts presented in the text. The case studies are generally drawn from news events or from daily experiences familiar to resident of North America.
  • Key Issues. Each chapter contains a set of three, four,; or five key issues around which the chapter material is organized. These questions reappear as major headings within the chapter. Other than in Chapter 1, all questions include one of the two key geographic concerns: where or why.
  • Key Terms. The key terms in each chapter are indicated in bold type when they are introduced. These; terms are also listed at the end of the chapter and defined at the end of the book.
  • Contemporary Geographic Tools. Each chapter has a one-or two-page box that explores in depth an issue related to the subject of the chapter. The boxes shown how geographic tools, such as geographic information systems, aerial photography, and remotely sensed images, have been used to resolve—or at least understand—cultural, political, and economic controversies and disputes.
  • Summary. The key issues are repeated at the end off the chapter with a brief review of the important concepts covered in detail in the text.
  • Case Study Revisited. Additional information related to) the chapter's case study may be used to reinforce some; of the main points.
  • Thinking Geographically. This section offers five questions based on concepts and themes developed in the chapter. The questions help students apply geographic concepts to explore issues more intensively.
  • On the Internet. The internet site (www.prenhall.com/rubenstein) that accompanies the book offers a variety of resources for both students and professors. The site features review exercises for students, critical thinking problems, annotated resources for further exploration, and mapping exercises.
  • Further Readings. A list of books and articles is provided for students who wish to study the subject further.

Suggestions for Use

This book can be used in an introductory human or cultural geography course that extends over one semester, one quarter, or two quarters. An instructor in a one-semester course could devote one week to each of the chapters, leaving time for examinations. In a one-quarter course, the instructor might need to omit some of the book's material.

A course with more of a cultural orientation could use Chapters 1 through 8, plus Chapter 14. If the course has more of an economic orientation, then the appropriate chapters would be 1 through 3 and 8 through 14.

A two-quarter course could be organized around the culturally oriented Chapters 1''through 8 during the first quarter and the more economically oriented Chapters 9 through 14 during the second quarter. Topics of particular interest to the instructor or students could be discussed for more than one week.

Changes

A central theme in this book is a tension between two important themes—globalization and cultural diversity. In many respects we are living in a more unified world economically, culturally, and environmentally. The actions of a particular corporation or country affect people around the world. This book argues that after a period when globalization of the economy and culture has been a paramount concern in geographic analysis, local diversity now demands equal time. People are taking deliberate steps to retain distinctive cultural identities. They are preserving little used languages, fighting fiercely to protect their religions, and carving out distinctive economic roles.

A major change in this edition is an emphasis on five basic concepts of space, place, region, scale, and connections. Chapter 1 has been substantially rewritten around these five concepts and renamed "Thinking Geographically" The inspiration for this emphasis came from the Advanced Placement in College-Level Human Geography examination, based on National Geography Standards, which is organized around these five concepts.

Two chapters of particular importance in this book are Ethnicity (Chapter 7) and Services (Chapter 12). Ethnicity, like language and religion, is increasingly a source of pride to people and a link to the cultural traditions of ancestors. Ethnicity may help to explain demographic, health, and economic conditions and patterns of inequality and discrimination. Some of the material in Chapter 7 was found elsewhere in previous editions, including U.S. urban patterns, South Africa's history of apartheid, and ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. Two-thirds of North Americans work in services, but this sector of the economy receives minimal treatment in introductory (or even intermediate-level) geography books. Chapter 12 is designed to rectify that imbalance.

Finally, given the enormous amount of material now available electronically, through CD-ROM, Internet, and so on, why should an instructor continue to make students buy an expensive textbook? In the computer age, is a textbook an anachronism? A book is a slow way to communicate: By the time this book is in your hands, something in it will be outdated; perhaps there will be a new war, peace treaty, or United Nations member. The information superhighway filled with data that can be quickly retrieved, but the information is poorly organized and written.

In contrast, a high-quality book is crafted carefully b the author, editors, and publisher. The author has rewritten these sentences several times to convey a precise meaning. Editors then change many of the words an punctuation to assure that the author's intended meaning is successfully communicated. A book allows an author t lay out a more careful and clear route to explanation an understanding than is possible electronically. For now computers are tools for retrieval of facts and for advance analysis, but they cannot yet compete with books in explaining a discipline's basic concepts and themes.

Great for AP Human Geography

Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students!

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology is the most widely adopted, user-friendly manual available for teaching laboratories in introductory geology and geoscience. The manual has been produced under the auspices of the American Geological Institute (AGI) and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT). It is backed up by an Internet site, GeoTools (ruler, protractor, UTM grids, sediment grain-size scale, etc.), Instructor Resource Guide, Instructor Slide Set, Instructor Transparency Set, and a Digital Image Gallery (DIGIT) CD-ROM.

The idea for such a jointly sponsored laboratory manual was proffered by Robert W. Ridky (past president of NAGT and past member of the AGI Education Advisory Committee), who envisioned a manual made up of the, "best laboratory investigations written by geology teachers." To that end, this product is the 17-year evolution of the cumulative ideas of more than 160 contributing authors, faculty peer reviewers, and students and faculty who have used past editions. Undergraduate students have field tested all parts of this sixth edition and helped make it the most student-friendly edition ever.

OUTSTANDING FEATURES

This new edition contains the strengths of five past editions and new features developed at the request of peer reviewers and faculty and students who have used previous editions. The most outstanding features of this new edition are as follows.

16 Basic Laboratories

There are 16 laboratories on topics ranked most important by faculty peer reviewers. Each lab has 3-6 parts that can be mixed or matched at the instructor's discretion.

Consistent Focus and Pedagogy

Each Laboratory engages students in learning principles of geology and their applications to everyday life in terms of natural resources, natural hazards, and human risks. Students develop skills and infer results by analysis of maps/samples/photos, measuring, experimenting, making models, classifying, charting, graphing, and calculating.

Materials

Laboratories are based on samples and equipment normally housed in existing geoscience teaching laboratories (page ix). No expensive items to buy.

Greater Visual Clarity and Appeal

The manual is more richly illustrated than any other manual on the market. More than 280 high-quality photographs, images, stereograms, maps, and charts reinforce the visual aspect of geology and enhance student learning. More than half of these are revised or newly created on the basis of peer reviews and student feedback.

New Hands-On Experimental Labs

New Laboratory One engages students in geologic observation, measurement, and experimentation using standard laboratory equipment and techniques to measure materials, experiment with simple models, calculate numerical relationships, and evaluate how rock densities and isostasy influence global topography.

New Laboratory Two challenges students to explore and evaluate plate tectonics, mantle convection, and the origin of magma using seismic tomography, lava lamps, physical and graphical models of partial melting, maps, and calculations.

New GeoTools

There are rulers, protractors, sediment grain size scales, UTM grids, and other laboratory tools to cut from transparent sheets at the back of the manual.

New Emphasis on GPS and UTM

Students are introduced to these topics and their application in mapping and geology. UTM grids are provided for most scales of U.S. and Canadian maps.

So-so literature text

We bought this for one of our public schooled kids to avoid carrying another heavy text back and forth. It's okay, but what we don't like is that it uses a lot of excerpts while a good literature course would use full novels along with poetry and short stories. If you are homeschooling or afterschooling, and we're currently doing both, a far better book for introducing literary analysis and also for helping people learn to teach this subject is Windows to the World by Lesha Myers, although people should know that while Myers teaches with secular examples, she uses a Christian perspective in which to analyse with. However, you can use these principles to analyse any literary work.

About the Author

Judy Janing, Ph.D., R.N., EMT-P is an experienced researcher and analyst, and serves as an Emergency Program Specialist with IOCAD Emergency Services Group. Ms. Janing has over 25 years experience in emergency response and over 10 years experience in education. She has served as the lead educational developer for the development or revision of several courses at the National Fire Academy and various universities. Ms. Janing was involved with the Omaha, Nebraska fire department's EMS program for many years. Her Ph.D. is in Community and Human Resources, specializing in evaluation methodology; her Masters Degree is in Adult Education. She has published several clinical, educational, and research articles in various peer journals, and has co-authored several texts. She is an adjunct faculty member at the National Fire Academy.

Gordon M. Sachs, MPA, EFO is Director of IOCAD Emergency Services Group and has served as Chief of Fairfield (PA) Fire and EMS. He is a former program manager with the Federal Emergency Management Agency's U.S. Fire Administration. He has over 25 years of emergency response experience, particularly in the area of incident command, training, and safety. He is an adjunct faculty member in the EMS Management/Leadership, Command and Control and Emergency Response to Terrorism curricula at the National Fire Academy. He has written many journal articles on EMS management/leadership and responder safety/health, and has authored or co-authored several books in these areas. He has a Masters Degree in Public Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Education, three Associate in Applied Science Degrees in Fire Science disciplines, and an Executive Fire Officer Certificate from the National Fire Academy.

This book does do a nice job of covering "Risk Management" issues. It is a pretty good review for administrators. This would not work out for anyone trying to learn new topics. The chaperter are very vague and require and advanced background of current fire service management.
