About the Author
Paul G. Hewitt was a Silver Medallist Flyweight Boxing Champion for New England State at the age of 17. He was then a cartoonist, sign painter, and uranium prospector before beginning his physics studies.

Hewitt's first book, "Conceptual Physics," now in its Ninth Edition, was published in 1971, while he was teaching at City College of San Francisco. He has also served as a guest lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and most recently at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Hewitt recently retired from teaching at the City College of San Francisco and at San Francisco's world-famous science museum, the Exploratorium.

John Suchocki received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1987 from Virginia Commonwealth University, where his research focused on the isolation and characterization of natural products. After a two year post-doc in medicinal chemistry/pharmacology at the Medical College of Virginia, John became a visiting assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he began working with his uncle, Paul Hewitt, on "Conceptual Physical Science," After a couple of years at the Manoa campus, John transferred to and eventually received tenure from Leeward Community College, one of the University of Hawaii's community colleges. At Leeward CC, his research efforts turned to chemical education, with particular emphasis on liberal arts chemistry courses and distance learning technology. After a decade in Hawaii, John relocated to Vermont with his wife and three children, where he now teaches liberal arts chemistry at Saint Michael's College. Concurrent to his writingand teaching careers, John is also the writer of "Conceptual Chemistry," now in its Second Edition, and a producer of multimedia content for science education, including his "Conceptual Chemistry Alive!" CD-ROM series. Leslie Hewitt, a former teacher at Westlake Elementary School in Daly City, CA, received her B.A. in Geology from San Francisco State University.

Math Lite? Hello, Check the Title!

I have seen several scathing reviews here, based on the fact this text is not Math Intensive; but that is exactly the point of the book! I can teach kids who previously had little interest in the sciences and none in Physics, and suck 'em right on in to the beauty of understanding how the world works. We can then progress to other resources for "Problem Solving".

I agree that by itself, this is not adequate preparation for the AP Exams. It does, however, provide the framework for understanding what we are working toward, and getting the attention of the non- "Math-head" students, so they can see some point to the science. Since many, many adolescents have a hard time applying themselves to subject matter which seems purely theoretical, this an invaulable service.

I believe every student should start with Conceptual Physics. Every educated person should have some basic understanding of these ideas, even if he or she is a (gasp!) Liberal Arts type. Those who wish to pursue engineering, obviously, should then progress further, with a more mathematically challenging follow-on text.

Great book for people of any age on how our world works! As an accredited Mary Wanless "Ride With Your Mind" coach, the sections on Mechanics (inertia, action,reaction, mass, momentum, kinetic energy, gravity...) and on Wave theory (resonance, interference) are a great help in explaining to people the rational laws of the interface between human & horse in horseback riding (a field with many illogical traditions)!

Public Order: A Global Perspective presents issues concerning public disorder from a multitude of countries to provide the audience with the most comprehensive perspective on this subject. This book represents a pioneering effort in the field of policing, as it is the first book that brings together a collection of articles on public order written by both practitioners and scholars from all continents of the world.

Public order policing, which is the subject of this book, represents a major concern for governments in general and the police in particular everywhere. Many chapters included in this book are based on original papers presented at the Sixth Annual Meeting of International Police Executive Symposium (IPES; see Appendix A for more details) held in Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, July 13-16, 1999. These chapters have been subsequently revised several times in order to present the most contemporary perspectives on the subject. Some other chapters were specifically written for this book and have not been published previously, while still others were previously published as journal articles but have been updated to reflect changes in recent years. It is a pioneering effort in the field of public order policing, as this is the first book that brings together a collection of chapters written by both practitioners and scholars from all continents of the world. It includes material on the subject in a great variety of nations, a much more diverse set than the traditional focus on Western democracies. Many of the chapters also portray the full range of public order situations that confront police, not just public protest as the problem of public order policing.

"Public order" may mean different things to different people. Most police experts in the United States adopt a narrow definition of the term as referring to order maintenance activities during routine patrol and traffic enforcement. Contributors to this book tend to take on a broad and diverse view of public order policing on the basis of their professional experiences and academic research. In this broad definition, public order is viewed as involving management of various activities that disturb or will disturb public peace by either overt or covert actions on various scales, that demand both routine and special police interventions. A variety of public order problems is therefore considered within the realm of public order policing, including demonstrations, protests, riots, celebrations, ceremonies, street vendors, labor activity, traffic control, sports violence, intergroup violence, certain types of crimes, and terrorism. Such a broad definition of public order issues may raise questions from police experts in the United States who, for example, may accept overt political protests as a public order issue but not terrorism that involves covert actions. But since terrorist activities have become a more common police concern after the September 11, 2001, attack in the United States and in many Middle Eastern countries, such as the postwar Iraq, and also since terrorism destroys peace and public order and requires active police intervention, we regard it as a public order issue. Crimes may not strike U.S. police experts as a public order problem either, but certain crimes are viewed as such by some contributors through the lens of police organizations rather than through the lens of various public order problems.

As we reviewed the chapters in this book, it became clear to us that there are several consistent themes in public order policing that transcend national or regional boundaries with wide policy implications for the global community. These themes include special-issue protests, economic and social demands, terrorism and political violence, and crime problems as public disorder. Some chapters also examine community policing and private security as strategies in policing public order. We have therefore divided this book into five sections that reflect these public order issues and strategies: "Issue-Oriented Protests," "Mass Actions Centering on Quality-of-Life Demands," "Impact of Terrorism on Public Order Policing," "Crime as Public Disorder," and "Public Order Policing within the Context of Community Policing."

Chapters under "Issue-Oriented Protests" discuss public order events such as demonstrations and protests that do not present a clear pattern, a central theme, or a consistent issue. Each protest tends to focus on only a particular issue unrelated to other protests. Demonstrators involved in issue-oriented protests are also quite diverse and usually represent particular groups of individuals. Chapters under "Mass Actions Centering on Quality-of-Life Demands" examine protests that are driven primarily by economic concerns and secondarily by social issues and political problems. Citizens in these protests demand, for example, equitable economic opportunities, union rights, employment benefits, and better living conditions. Chapters under "Impact of Terrorism on Public Order Policing" are related to terrorism. Two of the three chapters in this section represent some U.S. perspectives and strategies, while the third chapter examines political violence and terrorist events from an Indian perspective. Chapters under "Crime as Public Disorder" define public disorder situations as crime problems from the police organizational perspectives. Such crime problems may include, for example, property crimes during riots or may be caused by individuals motivated by material gains. Chapters under "Public Order Policing within the Context of Community Policing" do not focus on a particular type of public disorder. Instead, the two chapters in this section discuss public order management as related to community policing and demonstrate how this recent development in policing provides a new frame of reference for police agencies engaged in public order policing.

The organization of the chapters in this book under the five previously described themes does not imply that they represent an exhaustive list of public order issues and strategies concerning the police in the world. Nor do we claim that countries not represented in this book have to confront the same public order issues. We are aware that we do not have as many contributors from as many countries as we have desired. The lack of contributors from such countries as Russia, Yugoslavia, Israel, Iraq, the Philippines, and Venezuela does not imply that these countries' perspectives are unimportant. Nonetheless, the world coverage of public order policing in this book is much wider than what one would normally find in similar publications. Despite the differences in the ways public unrest develops and the themes in public protests, there are some common features in terms of policing these events. The measures that governments and police all over the world adopt to contain and control such events are quite similar. The issues, lessons, and strategies presented in this book therefore are clearly relevant to managing public order problems in many countries in the world with serious public disorders, such as postwar Iraq, particularly when the Iraqi people formed their own legitimate government in the future. Also, because of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, many changes have taken place in policing around the world, making many of the issues and strategies elaborated in this book more timely and relevant to policing in general.

The five sections under which the chapters are grouped are not meant to indicate that these sections are mutually exclusive. Each chapter is put under a particular section on the basis of its primary content, not on the country the chapter represents. The titles for these sections only suggest thematic emphasis of the chapters presented and do not correspond with the geography of the countries represented. If a paper on a European or North American country happens to be put under "Issue-Oriented Protests," it does not imply that there are no mass actions regarding quality-of-life demands in Europe and North America. Nor does it mean that other nations not represented in this section do not have issue-oriented protests. The organization of several African countries under "Mass Actions Centering on Quality-of-Life Demands" does not mean that they confront only quality-of-life concerns. There are clearly issue-oriented protests, and the public order is also disturbed by terrorism and crimes in Africa. The United States is treated primarily under terrorism, but there are plenty of issue-oriented protests and mass actions dealing with quality-of-life demands in the United States. A number of civil disturbances, riots, and protests in the United States related to race, for example, would qualify as quality-of-life demands. Many U.S. cities, for instance, have trouble policing street vendors and the associated difficulties of maintaining public order. This is no different from the several African nations where the same problem exists.

With contributors from all five continents of the world who include both police practitioners and scholars, it is natural that the style of various chapters is not always consistent. Practitioners, for example, tend to describe their experiences and policies with relatively fewer citations to sources. Researchers and scholars pay more attention to concepts, cite more sources, and write at a relatively higher level of academic theorization. We do not feel that it is appropriate for us to set a particular standard or style for authors coming from such radically different cultural, political, and professional backgrounds. Rather, we believe that we would do the readers a better service to maintain the originality of these chapters.

No one can accurately predict which direction China will ultimately take. Even the best China hands have been surprised, therefore it would not be realistic to say the contributors know better.

One of my favourite sayings is "There is no such thing as a China Expert, only people with varying degrees of ignorance …" But one thing for certain is that foreign investment will play a role in shaping that ultimate outcome. Following the China Streetsmart approach, foreign investors will ensure they profit from China and China will profit from the wealth of experience they bring – an ideal win-win scenario. The positive effects FDI has had and will continue to have on China’s future generations, who are far more openminded and adaptable than their predecessors, suggest a re-emerging China that is open to the world. This openness will not only be good for its own citizens, but also for the world.

This book saved our company!!!

We've been a family business for many generations and realize, like Thomas Friedman says, The World is Flat" (another great book) and we need to start expanding our business abroad. Our family business finally made the plunge and invested in a factory in China. During our negotiations with the Chinese a small issue came up about who controlled the chop or business stamp. At first we didn't think much about this, but after reading China Streetsmart and following the case study in the book we began to realize this little chop means a heck of a lot more to the Chinese and their government than we first realized. After asking around with other companies setting up in China as well, we now realize that the situations explained in this book are real life issues and we now insist we control the chop.

I've read many other books about China and none go into the detail China Streetsmart does in how to set up a company properly. It has been our guidebook along the way. Most just give you vague examples. So far the case that has been presented in this book is been pretty similar to our own experiences. The one little pointer about the chop alone was well worth the price of the book. This book saved us a lot of headaches. I like the common sense approach the author takes towards China and it amazes me at the basic blunders other companies have made. Hopefully we won't be one of them!

Cross-Cultural Teaching Aid

I am a cross-cultural professional with over 20 years in the field. I've just returned from a trip to China and am now in the process of expanding my practice into the China field given my clients needs to also expand there. I've since read a lot of China books, including Chinese Business Etiquette & One Billion Customers and China Streetsmart is by far the best book I've read which accurately highlights the cultural challenges business executives go through when entering a new market.

I especially like the point the author makes about the importance of integrating the family in an overseas move since a businessperson's success can be strongly influenced by the home environment. Most business books tend to stress the transaction forgeting that often its the process on how its derived which will determine the long term success.

The author's no nonsense approach to China has helped demystify many of the confusing stories I heard about what it takes to succeed in China. Now that I've been there I understand even more clearly and have now started to recommend this book to all my clients.

Hands down the Best Resource Guide on the subject

I read John Chan's title after finishing a 9 year expat assignment in China. I was reading numerous publications on the subject to see how other's experiences compared with my own. Other books covered the typical topics with stories to illustrate the points, but I found many of them dated to the China of today, and too generalized. China is on a rapid pace of change and the practices & customs vary significantly by local area. "China Streetsmart" was current, accurately portrayed the regional dynamics of the China business environment, and offered widely applicable & fundamental guidelines to be successful. The recounting of real life experiences were so true to my own, it was uncanny. I only wish I had John's book 9 years ago. If your company or yourself are going to China, then make this book a prerequisite. There's not a single book out there that will prepare you for every situation, but if you read just one, I highly recommend "China Streetsmart" by John Chan. Take it from someone who has been there, the better you're prepared, the better your results.

About the Author

Jon Wiles is a professor of education at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Joseph Bondi is a professor of education at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Both authors received their doctoral degrees from the University of Florida.

As a writing team, Wiles and Bondi have co-authored a number of major texts in curriculum, supervision, administration, and middle school education. In addition to Supervision: A Guide to Practice, other texts for Merrill (an imprint of Prentice Hall) include Curriculum Development: A Guide to Practice, The Essential Middle School, and The New American Middle School.

Dr. Wiles and Dr. Bondi are highly experienced educators, having served as researchers, administrators, teachers, and curriculum directors during their careers. As consultants, they have worked together in all fifty states and twenty foreign nations.

Out of date

Has a lot of good background, but if you are looking for in-depth information about the Pentium family, you should likely skip this book. The "Pentium and Pentium Pro" chapter starts page 753, "Pentium II, III and 4" starts page 783, and "Appendixes" star page 802, meaning 30 pages and 19 pages respectively on the last two Intel processor families.
Several references in the book state things like "just introduced" or "this year", but were obviously from early editions.
I recognize how hard it is to keep up to date - The current (as of this writing) architecture documents from Intel on IA-32e and AMD for AMD64 are several thousands of pages and free for download. Of course, I never expected 64 bit architecture discussion in this book, but but I was looking for a narrative that would set the base and context of modern 32 bit implementations.

Excellent book

This book is nothing for beginners - or a hard piece to digest. It is very detail oriented and a very good compendium to get to know the x86 architecture from the roots. Not very cheap and lots of pages to read, you do get an in depth knowledge on the x86 architecture, the processors and insight into the instruction set.

Very detail oriented, complete and good reference

I have read the first 140 pages of this book, and I really like it. So far, I have the following comments.
Good points:
1.) It covers both real and protected mode from the start. Other books wait until the middle of the books before they cover protected mode.
2.) Assembly language command mechanism are explained in great detail. The author explain exactly what's going on. How the data moved from memory to register, register to register, how the memory in a computer is organized, how exactly PUSH and POP command works etc. There are lots of diagram that illustrate his explanations.
3.) It covers from 8086 to Pentium II hardware architecture. Many books are strictly limited to outdated 8086 and 8088 processors.
4.) The exercises at the end of each chapter increases my understanding of the subject and answers to even numbered problems are available at the end of the book.
Bad Points:
1.)Assembly language and processor architecture are hard subjects. You have to read each chapter several times before you can get a good grasp of the topic.
2.)Some of the topic presented by the authors can not be easily understood until you read the subsequent chapters.
One suggestion for people who read the book: Make sure you know how to convert binary, hexadecimal and decimal number. You have to know these otherwise you can get lost. Some basic understanding of logic gates is also helpfull!
