Two of these questions are integrated and give students the opportunity to apply principles learned in earlier chapters. Marked with a special icon, these integrated questions encourage students to think about the "big picture." Four-Way Approach to Vocabulary Development. The text's four-way method of vocabulary reinforcement helps students learn basic business vocabulary with ease. First, each term is printed in boldface within the text. Second, a definition appears in the margin adjacent to the term. Third, an alphabetical list of key terms appears at the end of each chapter, with convenient cross-references to the pages where the terms are defined. Fourth, all marginal definitions are assembled in an alphabetical Glossary at the end of the book. Team Building Exercises. In addition to "Building Your Team Skills" exercises, many of the exercises included in Business in Action are designed to be worked on in teams. This is especially true for application and critical thinking questions, in addition to all cases, Web-based exercises, business mysteries, and research exercises. • Video cases. Professionally produced video cases give students a first-hand view of the challenges that BMC, a business animation company, faces as it transacts business electronically.
  • Internet exercises. Students become acquainted with the wealth of information on the Web by completing the text's "See It on the Web," "Learn More Online," and supplemental online Internet exercises.
  • BUSINESS MYSTERIES AND KEY PRINCIPLES

Students help two business detectives, Nick and Natasha, investigate and solve a series of intriguing business mysteries at the end of each text part. The goal is to find out why, when a company appears to be doing everything right, it surprisingly stumbles or falls, or suddenly changes its course of action. Featured companies include Intel, DaimlerChrysler, Boeing, PeopleSoft, Saturn, and Schwab.

To solve the company mysteries, students apply imaginative thinking to the evidence and use clues strategically placed in the margins throughout the textbook. These clues consist of key business principles that highlight the latest management thinking by today's most recognized and respected business leaders—Peter Drucker, Clayton Christensen, Gary Hamel, Bill Gates, Thomas Friedman, Arthur Levitt, Jr., Tom Peters, Al Ries, Jack Trout, and more.

The "Business Mystery" features continue with supplemental online exercises. Students are asked to solve the mysteries of e-business using the same chapter clues and featured companies.

SEE IT ON THE WEB FEATURES AND EXERCISES

Students become acquainted with the Web and its wealth of information that relates to the content of Business in Action. In each chapter, three "See It on the Web" features describe Web sites that reinforce and extend chapter material.

Three end-of-chapter exercises are directly tied to the showcased "See It on the Web" sites and give students experience with the rich resources of the Web. The exercises provide students with navigational directions, guidance, and hints. Students who complete these exercises will learn how to use the Internet proficiently and productively.

    SPECIAL FEATURE BOXES

Special feature boxes make the world of business come alive with fresh, never-before-seen examples that are carefully placed in each chapter to further enhance student learning. Each box includes two critical-thinking questions that are ideal for developing individual or team problem-solving skills. Students will enjoy the variety of business topics, which include

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tries Harder, and It Pays Off • How Cisco Bought Its Way to the Top • How Michael Dell Works His Magic • Office Ethics: Teams Make It Hard to Tattle • Mervyn's Calls SWAT Team to the Rescue • Chek Lap Kok's Turbulent Takeoff • Is Telecommuting Right for You? • Are Temp Workers Becoming a Full-Time Headache? • It's Okay to Fall Asleep on the Job • It's the Brand, Stupid • Auditors and Clients: Too Close for Comfort?

Special feature boxes titled "Focus on E-Business" highlight the many challenges companies are facing in the world of electronic commerce. Topics include

SPOTLIGHT ON FIVE MAJOR BUSINESS CHALLENGES

Five business themes are woven into the chapter text. Real-world examples and discussion bring vivid insights into how businesspeople face these challenges on a daily basis. They are

    • Keeping Pace with Technology and Electronic Commerce
    • Supporting Quality Initiatives and Achieving Customer Satisfaction
    • Starting and Managing a Small Business in Today's Competitive Environment
    • Thinking Globally and Committing to a Culturally Diverse Work Force
    • Behaving in an Ethically and Socially Responsible Manner
EXERCISES AND LEARNING TOOLS FOCUS ON REAL-WORLD COMPETENCIES AS RECOMMENDED BY SCANS

As described in the SCANS (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) report from the Department of Labor, it is essential that students meet national standards of academic and occupational skill. Like no other introduction to business text, Business in Action emphasizes the skills and competencies necessary for students to make the transition from academia to the workplace.

To help accomplish the SCANS goal, this text offers extensive, specifically designed pedagogy that is grounded in real-world situations. This pedagogy includes features and exercises that stimulate critical thinking skills such as observation, interpretation, organization, decision making, analysis, and practical application of chapter concepts—at a level that students will understand and enjoy.

    SKILL-BUILDING, PRACTICAL, REAL-WORLD EXERCISES

Business in Action includes an extraordinary number of pedagogical devices that simplify teaching, facilitate learning, stimulate critical thinking, maintain interest and enjoyment, and illustrate the practical application of chapter concepts. These include

    • Building Your Team Skills. Chapter-related exercises teach students important team-building skills such as brainstorming, collaborative decision making, developing a consensus, debating, role-playing, and resolving conflict.
    • Handling Difficult Situations on the Job. Short, experiential exercises expose students to real-world business situations in which they must use the knowledge they've gained from the text, along with their good judgment, to solve a challenging workplace situation. Taken from actual events, these exercises are designed to develop student problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
    • Sharpening Your Communication Skills. The ability to communicate well—whether listening, speaking, reading, or writing—is a skill students must possess to have a successful business career. These exercises call on students to practice a wide range of communication activities, including one-on-one and group discussions, personal interviews, panel sessions, oral and written papers, and letter-and memo-writing assignments.
    • Exploring Career Opportunities. Students are given the opportunity to explore career resources on campus, observe businesspeople on their jobs, interview businesspeople, and perform self-evaluations to assess their own career skills and interests.
    • Developing Your Research Skills. These exercises familiarize students with the wide variety of business reference material available and give students practice in developing research skills.
LEARNING TOOLS THAT HELP DEVELOP SKILLS AND ENHANCE COMPREHENSION

Business in Action uses a variety of helpful learning tools to reinforce and apply chapter material as well as stimulate higher-level thinking skills. These include

    • Learning Objectives. Six chapter-opening learning objectives establish benchmarks for measuring success. Each numbered objective is clearly stated to signal important concepts students are expected to master. The numbered objectives reappear in the text margins close to the related material. The end-of-chapter "Summary of Learning Objectives" reinforces basic concepts by capsulizing chapter highlights for students.
    • Questions for Review. Five end-of-chapter questions reinforce learning and help students review the chapter material.
    • Questions for Analysis. Five end-of-chapter questions help students analyze chapter material. One of these questions is ethics-based and marked with a special icon.
    • Questions for Application. Four end-of-chapter questions give students the opportunity to apply principles presented in the chapter material. Two of these questions are integrated and give students the opportunity to apply principles learned in earlier chapters. Marked with a special icon, these integrated questions encourage students to think about the "big picture."
    • Four-Way Approach to Vocabulary Development.
    • Team Building Exercises. In addition to "Building Your Team Skills" exercises, many of the exercises included in Business in Action are designed to be worked on in teams. This is especially true for application and critical thinking questions, in addition to all cases, Web-based exercises, business mysteries, and research exercises.
    • Lively, Conversational Writing Style. Read a few pages of this textbook and then read a few pages of another introduction to business textbook. We think you will immediately notice how the lucid writing style in Business in Action makes the material pleasing to read and easy to comprehend. We have carefully monitored the text's content and its reading level to make sure they are neither too simple nor too difficult.
    • Comprehensive Video Cases. Brand new and professionally produced Video Cases feature BMC, a business animation company. Each video case includes questions and exercises that help students understand how business principles and chapter concepts apply to the workplace.

    Review of Business in Action
    By Megan Hudnall
The book is the one that I needed but overall, I am very disappointed. It was listed under "Good" condition and when it came to me, the back over as well as the whole index was torn in half. The book looked like it was a chew toy for a dog. The other books that I ordered came just fine so maybe it was just the seller of this book that falsely advertised that the book was new. But I'm still not happy.

    Understanding the Complexity of Business
    By Steven T. Meadows
Business in Action is an overview of the many areas of business. This book is highly illustrated, with lots of pictures, graphs, and internet connections. Definitions are listed as margin notes in Blue to highlight the text on that subject. The pace of the book is quick with a lot of information compressed into a few paragraphs, with the occasional commentary. Longer essays are in the back of each chapter, with more websites then you could vist in a day.

A Must Read Before Investing In Latin America
    By Cris Arcos
This timely book is a must for anyone contemplating investing or trading in Latin America. It offers the most complete insight of the region's business/economic climate. Moreover, it serves as an excellent guide to avoid the many stumbling blocks often encountered by many U.S. businessmen in formulating a business case or strategy. The chapter on 'Reaching the New Latin Consumers' is most instructive. Here the authors' thorough analysis on identifying and reaching the consumer is vital to any business case. Too often U.S. companies fail to fully understand the Latin consumer in terms of demand and purchasing power. The Mexican and Brazilian case studies presented are outstanding. Again this gem of a book is indispensable to anyone interested or planning to go after the 600 million population south of the border.

Keyes to Understanding Latin American Business Strategies
    By William B. Werther, Jr.
Many neophytes think of Latin America as a large, undifferentiated arena in which to sell. Robles, Simon, and Haar show otherwise. Based on more than 100 interviews with key decision makers, they talk about how to reach tens of millions of customers and clients across Latin American. They delve into the impact of technology on the value chain in Latin America and show likely growth scenarios. But, their major contribution is showing how strategic thinkers approach Latin America and the differing strategic approaches they use to win in one of the world's most important and fastest growning makets. Not just a good read, but informative to anyone wanting to do business in Latin America. Highly recommended.

    A Must Buy
    By Sonia Verdu
Winning Strategies for the New Latin Markets is a "must buy". It is an extremely well-written, thorough and up-to-date presentation and assessment of the new dynamics at play in Latin American markets--including the U.S. Hispanic market--and, through case examples, shows how companies can boost both profits and market share in this challenging environment.

Java became a powerful development platform for Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) in 2006. Java EE 5, released in May 2006, significantly enhanced the power and usability of the Web Services capabilities on the application server. Then Java SE 6, released in December 2006, incorporated the majority of those capabilities into the standard edition of the Java programming language.

Because robust Web Services technology is the foundation for implementing SOA, Java now provides the tools modern enterprises require to integrate their Java applications into SOA infrastructures.

Of course, Java has had basic Web Services capabilities for some time. JAX-RPC 1.0 was released in June 2002. J2EE 1.4, finalized in November 2003, included JAX-RPC 1.1. So what is significant about the latest versions of the Java Web Services (JWS) APIs?

The answers are power and ease of use. Programmers will find it much easier to build enterprise-class applications with Web Services in Java EE 5 than in J2EE 1.4. Evidence of that is contained in Chapters 9 and 10, which describe an application I developed to integrate online shopping across eBay, Yahoo! Shopping, and Amazon. It’s a pure Java EE 5 application, called SOAShopper, that consumes REST and SOAP services from those shopping sites. SOAShopper also provides its own SOAP and REST endpoints for cross-platform search, and supports an Ajax front-end. SOAShopper would have been a struggle to develop using J2EE 1.4 and JAX-RPC. With the new Java Web Services standards, it was a pleasure to write.

This book focuses on the following standards comprising the new Java Web Services:

    • JAX-WS 2.0 JSR 224—The Java API for XML-Based Web Services. The successor to JAX-RPC, it enables you to build and consume Web services with Java.
    • JAXB 2.0 JSR 222—The Java Architecture for XML Binding. Tightly integrated with JAX-WS, the JAXB standard controls how Java objects are represented as XML.
    • WS-Metadata JSR 181—Web Services Metadata for the Java Platform. WS-Metadata provides annotations that facilitate the flexible definition and deployment of Java Web Services.
    • WSEE 1.2 JSR 109—Web Services for Java EE. WSEE defines the programming model and run-time behavior of Web Services in the Java EE container.

These standards contain a few big improvements and many little enhancements that add up to a significantly more powerful Web Services programming platform. New annotations, for example, make it easier to write Web Services applications. And the delegation, in JAX-WS 2.0 JSR 224, of the Java/XML binding to JAXB 2.0 JSR 222 greatly improves the usability of JAX-WS as compared with JAX-RPC. The deployment model has been greatly simplified by WS-Metadata 1.0 JSR 181 and an improved 1.2 release of WSEE JSR-109.

Chapters 1 and 2 review these JWS standards in detail and describe how they improve on the previous set of JWS standards. Chapters 3 through 10 focus on writing code. To really understand the power and ease of use of the new Java Web Services, you need to start writing code. And that is primarily what this book is about. Chapters 3 through 10 are packed with code examples showing you how to best take advantage of the powerful features, avoid some of the pitfalls, and work around some of the limitations.

Chapter 11 looks to the future and offers some ideas, along with a prototype implementation, for a WSDL-centric approach to creating Web Services that might further improve JWS as a platform for Service-Oriented Architecture.

I started writing this book in 2002, when JAX-RPC first appeared on the scene. I soon ran into trouble, though, because I wanted it to be a book for programmers and I had a hard time writing good sample code with JAX-RPC. Four years later, when I started playing around with beta versions of the GlassFish Java EE 5 application server, I noticed that things had significantly improved. It was now fun to program Web Services in Java and I recommitted myself to finishing this book.

The result is a book with lots of code showing you how to deal with SOAP, WSDL, and REST from inside the Java programming language. Hopefully this code, and the writing that goes with it, will help you master Java Web Services and enable you to start using Java as a powerful platform for SOA.

About This Book An Unbiased Guide to Java Web Services for SOA

My primary goal in this book is to offer an unbiased guide to using the Java Web Services (JWS) standards for SOA. Of course, any author has a bias, and I admit to believing that the JWS standards are quite good. Otherwise, I would not have written this book.

Having admitted my bias, I also freely admit that JWS has weaknesses, particularly when it comes to the development approach known as Start from WSDL and Java. As you will see described in many different ways in this book, the JWS standards present a Java-centric approach to Web Services. That approach can be troublesome when you need to work with established SOA standards and map your Java application to existing XML Schema documents and WSDLs.

In such situations, it’s helpful to be able to take a WSDL-centric approach to Web Services development. In this area, JWS is less strong. Throughout the book, I point out those shortcomings, and offer strategies you can use to overcome them. Chapter 11 even offers a prototype framework, called SOA-J, that illustrates an alternative, WSDL-centric approach to Java Web Services.

Written for Java Developers and Architects

This is a book for people who are interested in code—primarily the developers who write systems and the architects who design them. There are a lot of coding examples you can download, install, and run.

Being a book for Java programmers working with Web Services, the discussion and examples provided within assume you have a working knowledge of Java and a basic understanding of XML and XML Schema. You don’t need to know a lot about SOAP or WSDL to dive in and start learning. However, as you go along in the book, you might want to browse through an introductory tutorial on WSDL and/or XML Schema if you need to firm up your grasp on some of the Web Services basics. Throughout the book, I offer references to Web sites and other books where you can brush up on background material.

Knowledge of J2SE 5.0 Is Assumed

This book assumes you have a basic understanding of J2SE 5.0—particularly the Java language extensions generics and annotations. If you are not familiar with generics or annotations, you can learn all you need to know from the free documentation and tutorials available at http://java.sun.com.

Don’t be intimidated by these topics. Generics and annotations are not hard to master—and you need to understand them if you are going to do Web Services with Java EE 5 and Java SE 6. The reason I have not written an introduction to generics and annotations as part of this book is that there is so much good, free information available on the Web. My focus in this book is to go beyond what is freely available in the online tutorials and documentation.

    Why GlassFish?

All the code examples presented in this book have been developed and tested using the GlassFish GLASSFISH open source Java EE 5 reference implementation. At the time I wrote this, it was the only implementation available. Now that the book is going to press, there are more, and the code should run on all these platforms without change. The only changes that will need to be made have to do with the build process where GlassFish specific tools (e.g., the wsimport WSDL to Java compiler, the asadmin deployment utility) are used.

I plan to test the example code on other platforms as they become available and to post instructions for running them on JBoss, BEA, IBM, and so on, as these vendors support the JWS standards. Check the book’s forthcoming Web site (http://soabook.com) for updates on progress with other platforms.

If you haven’t tried GlassFish, I suggest you check it out at https://glassfish.dev.java.net. It supports the cutting edge in Java EE and the community is terrific. In particular, I’ve had good experiences getting technical support on the mailing lists. It’s not uncommon to post a question there and have one of the JSR specification leads respond with an answer within minutes!

    Why Some Topics Aren’t Covered

Both SOA and Web Services are vast topics. Even when restricting the discussion to Java technology, it is impossible to cover everything in one book. Faced with that reality, I decided to focus on what I consider to be the core issues that are important to Java developers and architects. The core issues involve creating, deploying, and invoking Web Services in a manner that enables them to be composed into loosely coupled SOA applications.

In narrowing the book’s focus, it is inevitable that I will have disappointed some readers because a particular topic of interest to them isn’t covered. Some of these topics, pointed out by my reviewers, are listed here, along with the reasons why I didn’t include them.

    SOA Design Principles

This is not a book that covers the concepts and design philosophy behind SOA. It is a how-to book that teaches Java developers to code SOA components using Java Web Services. For a thorough introduction to SOA concepts and design, I recommend Thomas Erl’s Service-Oriented Architecture Erl.

    UDDI

UDDI is very important. And Java EE 5 includes the JAX-R standard interface to UDDI repositories. But JAX-R hasn’t changed since J2EE 1.4. And it is covered well in many other books and online tutorials. So, in an effort to keep this book to a manageable size, I have left it out.

    Enterprise Messaging

I wish I could have included a chapter on Enterprise Messaging. After all, it is a cornerstone of SOA. However, this book restricts itself to the capabilities provided by JWS. JWS does not support WS-Reliable Messaging WS-RM or any other SOAP/WSDL-oriented reliable messaging mechanism. Of course, Java EE 5 includes support for the Java Message Service API (JMS). And JMS is a useful tool for implementing SOA applications. But by itself, JMS isn’t a Web Services tool. So, in the interest of focus, I have left it out.

WS-Addressing, WS-Security, and the Many Other WS-* Standards

Explaining the myriad standards for the Web Services stack would require many thousands of pages. Since these WS-* standards are not yet part of JWS, I have not covered them. In addition, my sense is that most Java developers are still mastering SOAP over HTTP. The need for a programmer’s guide to WS-* is probably several years away.

    Fonts and Special Characters

Courier font is used for Java types, XML Schema components, and all code examples included in the text. Courier font is also used to signify software-environment-specific items (e.g., paths, directories, environment variables) and text interactions with the computer.

Italics indicate that a term is defined in the glossary. I don’t always use italics—only when a term may not have been used before and I think the reader might want to know it is defined in the Glossary. Italics are also used for emphasis.

< > indicates an environment-specific directory location. Code Fragments in Text

The text contains lots of code fragments to illustrate the discussion. At the bottom of each code fragment is the file path showing where it came from. Moreover, there are line numbers to show you the line number in the file where the code comes from.

The author says it is hard...and proves it
    By T. Dugan
Mark Hansen says SOA using Java Web Services is hard and he seems to do his best to prove it.

The author states in the Preface, "...it is inevitable that I will have disappointed some readers because a particular topic of interest to them isn't covered." For me, that wasn't the problem. The problem was there was not enough grounding in what I already know to give me enough lift to understand the text.

I couldn't really follow most of the book. Reading this book, my concentration collapsed under a borage of acronyms and complex notations. I don't think this book is for someone who is not already nearly an expert on the subject. Too many times I saw phrases like "my purpose is not to write a detailed tutorial for..." -- leaving me wondering what background information he would provide.

I cannot say this is a bad book. I can only say I didn't get much out of it and that most developers would be challenged themselves. I am not an expert in SOA or Web Services, but I have been a Java developer more than six years and a software engineer for more than 20.

Despite being a book about Java Web Services, there is really not very much Java in the book. It's mostly dense text with XML examples.

Best book to know IN & OUT of webservices
    By Shilpa
This is a very good book to learn and master WebServices and SOA concepts. I am a developer and understand how difficult it is to develop and maintain webservices for an enterprise application. This book explains the concepts very clearly along with very good examples which I use as reference for my development. From design to implementation this book has been very helpful. I recommend that everyone who is working on webservices should have this book. This book also talks about interesting ideas which will help in designing robust and scalable web service applications. It surely helps improve design and build robust, scalable web service application, and very good for reference.

    Why We Wrote This Book

Sun certification exams are not tests given after class. If they were, it's unlikely that they would receive the wide ranging industry recognition that they enjoy. These exams are hard, and being hard means that they prove something, and that makes them worth passing. Not everybody does pass, even after repeated attempts.

The Sun exams are probably unique in that you don't have to take Sun training to pass, although of course, Sun training is helpful and a good idea to do anyway. The Sun exams have wide-ranging objectives that don't relate to one particular training course. The objectives for the Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA) for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition Technology exam are broad; they attempt to capture the main ideas that would be learned over a number of years as a computing professional, typically in a career that spans a longer time frame and more languages than just Java technology.

To address these issues, Sun's certification division plans to provide a study guide for each of its tests. This is one of those guides. This book is probably not the only study guide available for the exam, and it's certainly not the only way to prepare for the exam; however, we hope you'll find it helpful and that you'll learn something of value for your professional development, not just how to answer the exam questions. After all, the exam is meant to give you the opportunity to be a better architect, which in the long term will be far more helpful to your career than a piece of paper saying you passed an exam.

    About the Authors

Between us, we have over ten years experience working with Java technology, in terms of developing systems, teaching, and working on the certification exams. We have considerably more experience in the pre-Java technology world of computing, including C, C++, machine languages, hardware design, networking with Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), netbios and Novell, and database technologies. We were privileged to be members of the team that developed the architect certification exam, so we have an intimate knowledge of the difficulty of writing questions for this huge topic, and a fairly accurate view of the nature and scope of the exam. We don't claim to know it all, we don't think anyone does, this topic is too large. However, we hope that we have enough background knowledge, enough experience, and the right communication skills, to help you pass the architect certification exam, and to help you realize your potential as an architect.

We believe that whatever study method you use, and whatever resources you use to help you, the knowledge you gain will help you build better systems, and thereby become more successful in your work. We became involved in the exam project because we enjoy the thrill of creating a really elegant and successful system, and we wanted to help others experience that same satisfaction. For the same reason, we decided to take on the project that resulted in the book you're now reading.

    About This Book

The SCEA exam is intended for seasoned computing personnel, and it is not possible to condense all the required knowledge into a single book. This book is a study guide. We've tried to cover the key facts tested in the exam, but you must understand the concepts as well as the facts to pass this exam. You should probably do additional reading, and you must develop a general understanding of the ideas tested in the exam.

Some of the exam questions might look at a particular issue from a slightly different perspective than the one presented in this book. That is why it is important that you understand the issues. We deliberately avoided giving you the answers to any questions, which would only devalue the exam. Furthermore, the exam is the subject of ongoing development, with new questions being added and old ones being removed. It's probably obvious that this is done to reduce the chance of cheating, which again would devalue the exam and thereby devalue the effort you put into passing it.

Given that this book doesn't just list the answers, what does it do? It introduces the key concepts covered in the exam and clarifies the terminology. This will ensure that you're "on the same page" as the exam developers. It also lists references in which you can find additional discussion of topics that you might want to research. And, it provides self-evaluation questions that are designed to help you determine if you understand the topic.

You might be surprised to know that you could disagree with some of the answers given in this book and not be wrong. Architecture depends on the interaction of a great many conflicting forces, and two experienced architects will often come to quite contradictory conclusions about how best to solve a particular problem.

Most of the questions in this book carefully enumerate the values of the customer, and, using these values as hints, you should be able to see why a particular answer is listed as correct. However, it's probably more important that you can see the relationship between the correct answers and the alternative answers.

In the multiple choice element of the exam there is only one acceptable answer (or combination of answers). Because of this, you must have the ability to evaluate the questions dispassionately. You must answer them based solely on the information provided, and you should avoid the tendency to fill in additional "ifs, buts, and wherefores." Often the real exam lists a possible answer that is perfectly reasonable if you include just one additional value judgement, but because that value judgement is unsupported by the question, the answer is wrong in the context of the exam.

Learning to think like this isn't just a skill for getting through the exam, it will help you in your profession because it allows you to evaluate your own decision-making process, and determine if you are applying your own secret values to a decision, or if you are actually responding to a stated customer requirement. If you are an experienced architect, you know that it's OK, even essential in many cases, to use your values to fill in the blanks left by the customer. However, when you do so, you owe it to your customer to communicate your ideas. You might just prompt them to remember additional information.

    Who Should Read This Book

This book is not intended to give a novice programmer the skills and knowledge needed to pass the exam. It is intended to help complete the knowledge of someone who has several years of computing experience, although not all of that must be using Java technology; in fact you're probably better equipped if you have used other technologies as well. You should be aware of the broad meaning of the technologies discussed, but you do not necessarily have to have experience using all of them.

As we wrote the book, we used the following profile as a guide for the type of reader that might find this book helpful.

    • You understand object-oriented concepts, such as encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism, and you're comfortable with the interfaces as used in the Java programming language.
    • You have programmed in an object-oriented language, probably the Java programming language.
    • You have designed object-oriented systems.
    • You are preparing for the "Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition" exam or are otherwise seeking to improve your skills as an architect.

There are certainly other profiles for whom this book will be valuable. For example, many managers would find this book useful, provided they have a reasonably technical background, and they will gain sufficient understanding of the processes and values of architecture to allow them to manage effectively.

    How This Book Is Organized

The chapters in this book describe either general topics covered in the exam or one of the key objective groupings of the multiple choice part of the exam. Some of the general chapters provide overall background information and skills, and some relate directly to the assignment.

The chapters that relate directly to exam objectives take a consistent form. They start with a description of the objectives and provide background information about the topic. Next is a description of the prerequisite information that we assume you already know. Be careful about these prerequisites, we've tried to keep them to a minimum, and in some cases, there is no prior knowledge assumed, but if there are prerequisites listed, you must ensure that you meet all the prerequisites. After the prerequisite list, the chapters move into the body of the discussion. At this point, you'll find the main descriptions of the issues at hand.

After a discussion of the issues, this book reviews the key points contained in the chapter. This will help you learn and review the material because it is a concise listing as opposed to the in-depth description provided in the chapter. If you believe that you already understand the issues in a chapter, you can simply go directly to this list and see if you are familiar with the information in the list.

Finally, the chapter presents a number of self-evaluation questions. You should not look at these questions as sample exam questions, although some do take the same format. Generally, they are intended to make you think, and to probe your understanding of the topic. This is much easier to achieve using a broad-based question rather than the more precise exam questions. You should be less concerned about the answers matching your answer, and more concerned about your thought processes covering the same ideas as are discussed in the question. As an example, this book contains questions that use a free-form answer, such as, "what are the issues that would influence a decision about?" You won't see that type of question in the exam, although you will need to outline your decision-making processes and priorities in your assignment submission. When you work through a question of this type, you should get a feeling of "OK, I thought of all those issues" and a feeling of confidence that you understand all of these issues. If you missed something, or if you don't really feel you understand a particular topic, you should be honest with yourself. Taking an honest, professional attitude to your self-judgement is the only way you can get the best from yourself and from this book.

    About the Case Study

This book presents a case study in a format that is similar to the assignment. You are presented with use cases, a domain object model, and additional requirements. This format should be familiar to you as an architect. Every system you work on in the real world will have requirements of some sort and it just so happens the exam assignment has chosen to define the requirements in use cases and a domain object model. As the architect for the system, you must provide class diagram(s), component diagram(s), and sequence or collaboration diagrams to communicate your architecture.

    About the Exam

The exam has three parts, a multiple choice test, an assignment, and a written part in which you discuss specific parts of your assignment.

Excellent Overview for Exam For the Experienced
    By James McPhate
I found this book almost PERFECT for my needs. Short, concise, and focused on the exam. The sample questions were also very reflective of the exam. If you pass the sample questions, you are probably ready for the exam. With what you learn from the sample questions, content as well as question style, you should actually do a bit better on the exam. That was my experience- about 75% on the book questions, 87% (42/48) on the exam, with no extra study after my initial reading.
And considering the purpose of architect certification is to certify someone with 5+ years experience and deep understanding of design and architectural issues, then a more detailed book would be a thick painful experience. Also, a more detailed book would commit the authors to exposing more of the exam content, and devalue it as a fair measure of an architect. The fact that it requires a wide professional background with some core reading is excellent. If you struggle with the exam, enjoy the honest feedback! You have more reading to do, and experience to gain.
With sufficient experience in Java, UML, design patterns, security, general IT and web knowledge, and basic architectural principles, the book more than suffices. Basic EJB knowledge is sufficient since the book doesn't expect a programmer's knowledge of APIs and such.
If you are new to architecture, my recommendations are similar to another reviewers:
    UML Distilled, Martin Fowler
    Design Patterns, Gamma et al
Mastering Enterprise Java Beans, Roman, Amber, Jewell
    EJB Design Patterns, Floyd Marinescu
And if you don't know enough about design patterns and UML to pass those chapters before even reading the chapters, you may be taking the exam a bit prematurely.
I will agree with one statement- the book lacks chapters on some of the objectives. But, considering that they might be considered fair prerequisites for someone qualified to take the exam, I'm not complaining. Though, in looking over my exam results, most of my wrong answers were from the sections without corresponding chapters...common architectures, legacy connectivity, messaging :(. I think my proclivity for screen-scraping did me in.
All-in-all, a masterful book and exam.

Covers some stuff but don't expect much of it
    By Alex
This book do cover some stuff you need to know to pass the certification exam , like firewalls , common architrecture , some information about security and localization . But it's a very badly written book , contains a lot of simple bugs like : book says that the name of interface which session bean has to implement is javax.ejb.Session ( not javax.ejb.SessionBean ) . I still found this book useful for the exam itself but I will never use this book as a referense .
