A complete waste of money and paper

This tutorial fails on every level possible. It does not teach Matlab in the context of solving signals and systems problems. It does not teach the theory behind signals and systems. If it hits a topic that requires anything greater than the most elementary explanation it merely refers you to the Matlab help files. I would expect that a book labeled "Computer Explorations in Signals & Systems in Matlab" to do just that - explore problems in signals and systems using Matlab by showing examples starting with the simple and moving up to the more complex that will involve looping and calling of subprograms. The exercises provided - unsolved of course - could have been good ones. The main problem with the exercises is that as you are doing them you have no idea if you are on the right track. You feel as though you are being led through a maze and only at the end of the exercise (which can consist of 10 or more subparts) do you finally get a feel for whether you have done anything correctly. This could have been a good book if the author would have only provided some examples of substance that would provide the student with the skills necessary for solving these exercises. To you professors out there - PLEASE stop wasting your students' hard-earned money and stop assigning this book as a required text. I am sure you can come up with good Matlab problems on your own and the book adds nothing to your students' educational experience. As an alternative might I recommend "Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB" by Ingle and Proakis. It doesn't have much theory either, but it does have detailed examples on how to do DSP in Matlab. It's $20 more expensive than this book, but at least you are not throwing money away.

The book is anything but teaching how to use matlab. Instead, the book is simply a collection of signals and systems problem set. And answers to questions are NOT given in the book. Nor is there any solved examples. Good job!

Not good for me

I am the matematican and I had to start learning C.M. from this book. And I didn't like it. First chapter is some very simplified approach to linear elasticity, but it doesn't developed any intuition and reading it was waste of time. Stretch tensor was introduced with avoided notion of polar decomposition. This presentation was far less intuitive for me. The linear algerbra behind primal stresses is described and computed in details, but nowadays the student involved in computer methods and engineering must know this things in my opinion. And the language is not instuitive: me, matematican, couldn't do most of exercises after reading chapter they relate to. It tasted like old-fashioned book.

Not Helpful - Except as a Footstool

I purchased this book for the first part of my Biomechanics class. We raced through the first 10 chapters, and each one was very difficult to understand. Fung skips steps in his derivations which, for an undergraduate, made studying more confusing and time consuming.

Probably the most frustrating part (at least for an engineering student) of the text is that none of the equations (except the ones from Chapter 1) are applied to anything. Not even for the problems at the end of each chapter. The book is just a long list of mathematical derivations regarding hypothetical blobs, I mean "bodies of mass", in space.

In summary, I wish this book had a lot more examples pertaining to applying all the equations written in this book. Perhaps application of these equations will be used in the second part of my Biomechanics class, where we use yet another Fung book. I hope so.

Sad.

This book is required for both sophomore and junior level US history, and it is terrible to say the least.

All matter of information is slapped together haphazardly to create an unappetizing blend of dry facts with painfully un-witty side comments added by the author of this monstrosity.

It is not organized in any fashion except chronological order. Unlike other better textbooks, by flipping to a page you cannot tell what chapter or subject you are in, and wallow in the fact that you have to read the incoherent jumble of ink on the page to determine it.

I am not looking forward to using it next year, it was extremely difficult to learn from and our teacher had to extract the information and return it to us in the form of notes. We rarely used it because it was so incredibly hard to follow.

Please avoid this book.

Nondescript and Poorly Edited

I am currently a first year high school teacher whose school has chosen Boorstin to for U.S. I and II. Boorstin's writing is unbelievably frustrating on so many levels. For advanced level students, the text is woefully incomplete. It seems clear that the author's focus was to be concise and simple; however what ends up happening as a result is that things such as causations and analysis are frequently left out. Advanced students will likely become frustrated over knowing the basic facts but not getting anywhere deeper - why did they happen? What historical debates have been had over the facts?
Ironically, my lower level students also hate the book and find it difficult to understand. Boorstin's review questions vary in difficulty between amusingly easy to impossibly hard - making many students apathetic about doing homework (even more than normal). In addition, Boorstin occasionally asks questions that are not referred to in the chapter. The editing in the book is seriously flawed.
The use of Boorstin's book puts the emphasis and burden of knowledge squarely on the teacher. Student-centered activities using the text become significantly harder (or, in the case of some new teachers, impossible) because there simply is not enough information provided to allow for students' opinions or creativity. Critical events in American history are left out - Bacon's rebellion for example is nowhere to be found. Other events, when covered, are woefully out of place - the Middle Passage is covered only two chapters before the Civil War!
Overall, Boorstin's text tries very hard to be a jack-of-all- trades, but fails to really satisfy anyone in the classroom. Avoid it.

This book is wicked hard to understand and follow!!! I am 17 years old and i am in a college prep american history class, and i dont understand. How am i supossed to learn anything if i cant read the words!!!
