A High School Physics Teacher

I used this resource occasionally last year because the text has little in the way of problems involving math. My main complaint is the topics addressed in this workbook are often not explained covered in the text. For example, the workbook topics of static drawings, coefficient of friction, frequency/period, and angular quantities. Consequently, the student often has only the brief workbook section introduction (1/2 page) and a sample problem for reference. In my experience this is insufficent. Yes, my students can sometimes step through the problem, but doing so forces the student outside the realm of conceptual physics which is the whole idea of this course.

It seems like this workbook was a too-quick attempt to throw a math resource into the course. The premise is good: the text needs more math so the student can see how math is the language of physics. But the task of introducing new topics should be left to the text.

wonderful for lower level physics and physical science

I have used the previous edition of this book for years and loved it. I actually use it in my Integrated Physics and Chemistry class. While I don't use every chapter, many of the chapters like motion, force, energy, and electricity are ideal for a lower level physics class. Her questions are cute and funny and the examples prior to the worksheets are IDEAL. They work problems just like the ones in the workbook.

L'Art de Lire introduces advanced beginner and intermediate students of French to nine fictional stories that cover a varied and enticing array of themes. It employs pre- and post-reading activities and vocabulary and grammar reviews to help students develop basic knowledge, strategies, and techniques for reading French. L'Art de Lire, now in its third edition, delivers a winning combination of inviting stories and a proven pedagogical approach that promises to bring students to a higher level of knowledge and enjoyment.

L'Art de Lire may be used at any level after the first year of French with students who have had little previous reading experience. Used in a course that focuses on the development of reading skills, or as a secondary text/reader in mufti-skilled course, it provides ample opportunities to learn to read French. The Third Edition retains the student-friendly format of the First and Second Editions and develops further student activities and investigations in and around the stories. We are grateful to our students and to our fellow teachers for their continued comments and suggestions. Many readers have appreciated the stories in L'Art de Lire, finding them to be intriguing or funny, moving or exciting. Stories are graded in difficulty; earlier readings are abridged and edited to make them more accessible. The number of cuts diminishes as the book progresses. Many selections are divided into a series of installments. All chapters are supported by a pedagogical apparatus that is both full and flexible.

The Préparation à la lecture starts with a concern for Lexique and highlights words in the context of explicit previews of the action. Through the first nine story segments, lexical categories distinguish Mots apparentés and Faux amis. Afterwards, these categories are presented together with other Vocabulaire. Grammaire sections include demonstrations of Mots-clés, function words that also provide discourse coherence. Grammar is presented to provide a focus of recognition needed for reading comprehension. L'art de lire sections present succinct discussions and contextual illustrations of broad and specific reading knowledge and techniques on matters of vocabulary, grammar, culture, and the coherence of story. The Exercises that conclude each Préparation à la lecture consolidate command of the vocabulary presented. They are intended to help the student prepare for the reading. This work on lexical awareness serves the kind of knowledge that helps students recognize and understand words in different contexts.

Marginal questions in French provide a convenient and rapid way of reviewing the reading selection in class and should help students find their way through difficult passages on their own. Following each selection, Activités sur le récit review, and ensure grasp, and recall of details at the levels of action, character, place, and theme. A range of activity types are employed including true/false and sentence-completion exercises; others call for identification of characters, actions, places, or objects from the story. Activities are presented in narrative order and are sufficiently detailed to cover all of the significant action of the reading. While they may look like exam questions, their purpose is to recirculate the narrative material and relevant vocabulary in order to ensure that students are able to remember and deal with the story on their own terms in French. Students should be encouraged to write out answers fully in order to practice perceiving details of the written language. The Sujets de discussion, de composition, de recherche, et de présentation encourage more critical responses. They bring the vocabulary of the story into more active use, invite students to think about meanings, and provide a framework in which they can discuss in French what pleases, bothers, or puzzles them about it—the motivation of the characters, the plausibility of the plot, the relationship to their own lives, and so forth. Here, what students talk about and write is encouraged to become some sort of composition. Many of these exercises encourage role-playing activities, monologues and dialogues, to help students develop dramatic aspects of the story in the classroom. These exercises provide guidance for class discussion and writing activities, short analyses and essays, to work out some critical responses to the texts. While numerous suggestions for specific assignments are given (e.g. "pour une discussion en classe et un petit essai ßcrit"), these are to be taken as possible assignments following the teacher's curriculum and the student's needs. Class discussion and review with these exercises can help develop interest in the stories in different ways, dramatic and intellectual, cultural and personal.

In this part as well, students are asked to explore information that goes beyond the text (A la recherche). Here, students will be encouraged to locate on their own visual materials, maps or pictures, and other cultural information referred to in the text selections. Responsibility for learning to read starts with the student's commitment. L'Art de Lire should serve teachers and students of the language with the means to engage, observe, help with, and account for processes of reading and learning to read. Most of the exercises in Préeparations and in Activités are lettered and numbered so that a key can be established. Some exercises may be usable for evaluation purposes. Part of instruction is helping students keep their own accounts.

Very Good Reader

I taught intermediate reading classes with this textbook and I found it very easy to use for the teacher as well as the students. I would not recommend it to individual learners unless they are advanced enough to understand the significance of the authors' selection. Simenon, Maupassant, Colette are very important authors, but they need to be introduced and perhaps instructors can ask the students to find additional information that will help the class grasp the significance of these authors. The text by Truffaut can be followed by a screening of L'Argent de poche. The linguistic quality of this manual is excellent, the texts are very well presented, and the exercises can be expanded by the teacher for in-class activities, tests, or homework. Some instructors might want to complement it with a grammar review book like Contrastes.

Very disappointing. Fairly dull.

L'art de lire was the text for an intermediate French class I took. Unfortunately for the class, this textbook has aged terribly. It begins with a large selection (130 pages, half the book) of two detective stories featuring M. Maigret. Think Agatha Christy. Think Hercule Poirot. The stories are dull, senseless, and have little real world application unless you want to talk about mud on car tires and people with bourgeois sensibilities.

The next 80 pages belong to Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). There are three short stories from him (unfortunately divided into halves.) Two of them deal directly with the Franco-Prussian war. War stories. Maupassant is a great writer, these stories are enjoyable, yet a little archaic. As a text for an intermediate class, where I still hadn't learned everything, marching through the literary forms Maupassant used wasn't a joy. Again, there was very little to relate these stories to speaking French in real settings or even reading real world French texts such as Le Monde or contemporary novels.

The last third of the book is assorted short stories, from various writers. They tend to be about children and are a bit on the sweet side. There's an excerpt from the novel The Glory of My Father and an excerpt from Truffaut's film Small Change, both of which are incredibly syruppy, sappy, and frankly, outdated in this age of irony (or is it post-irony?)

The cover of this book, featuring a vineyard and an old chateau, is symbolic for the contents: France is old. French is old. These texts are old and outdated.

If you are not forced to read this for a class, and want to read French literature on an intermediate level buy some comic books or Marc Levy's O' es-tu or any of a number of assorted novels from amazon France. L'art de lire is sure to dissapoint.

Good for Intermediate French students. Vocabulary is very advanced but the stories are worth reading. Most stories are less than 5 pages long.

Excellent Reading

I am a Senior Systems Analyst and I found this book very practical and true to life. The methodologies are very succint. All of the fat is cut away and all that is left are the tools used to analyze and manage the IS project. I have often thought about writing a book on project management, analysis and design and if I did I think that I would end up with something quite similar to this excellent work. I give this book my highest endorsement.

Pffffffft!

This book reaks. It's about half full with almost true-to-life generalizations. The other half is weighted down with overly detailed jargon intelligible only to working systems analysts. If you're a student, don't sign up for any class using this text. You'd be better off spending a couple of days with a real analyst (cheaper and faster, too). Other than that, it makes a great hundred dollar paper weight. Save your money!

I am quite disappointed with this book.
I have already included it in my "BOOKS FOR SALE" list.
Although it covered many many topics , but it doesn't provide enough details on each topic. There are not enough examples, too.
I really have doubt on the authors' knowledge.

Although books have been written on each of these separate subjects, the authors have highlighted the significant biological principles, scientific relationships, and management practices in a condensed but informative manner. TARGET AUDIENCE

This book is designed as a text for the introductory Animal Science course typically taught at universities and junior or community colleges. It is also a valuable reference book for livestock producers, vocational agriculture instructors, and others desiring an overview of livestock production principles and management. The book is basic and sufficiently simple for urban students with limited livestock experience, yet challenging for students who have a livestock production background. KEY FEATURES

The book is designed to accommodate several instructional approaches to teaching the introductory course: (1) the life-cycle biological principles approach, including such areas as consumer products, reproduction, breeding, nutrition, and animal health; (2) the species approach (teaching the course primarily in reference to the various species); or (3) a combination of the previous two. The latter appears to be the most popular teaching approach, covering principles in lecture and combining principles and species into laboratory exercises.

Some instructors will assign one or more papers on a topic selected by them or the students. The references at the end of each chapter are designed for students who want or need to explore certain topics in more depth.

Most instructors will not have sufficient time in their courses to assign all the chapters. Course outlines can be developed to include the chapters assigned and put them in the sequence that meets an instructor's preference. CHANGES IN THIS EDITION

This edition has been updated with current technical and applied information. Whenever possible, tables and figures have been revised with current data. The book arrived within the 7-14 business days. It was in perfect condition with no highlighting or marking. I don't know if I just got the luck of the bunch, but I am very pleased nonetheless. The content of the text is great and I constantly refer to it whenever I do an essay related to animal welfare or production for my classes. Great Science Text for Middle School!

The entire Prentice Hall Science Explorer series is fabulous! Each book covers a particular topic in great detail - loads of vivid pictures, easy to use layout and links to the Prentice Hall website for more interesting facts and sites for your child to use.

Each book is approximately 1/2 inch thick and has about 200 pages. Important information is high-lighted, key words and concepts are indicated in advance and small quizzes are included for each section of each chapter. Perfect for teaching kids how to find the useful information within the chapter.

My child used these books in 6th and 7th grade and we don't have a single complaint about them. They are a great resource to have at home - buy the ones that are of interest to your child. That is the great thing - you don't have to purchase a huge text, just the ones you want.
