From Library Journal
Sound scholarship declares itself on every page of these volumes, making each essential for libraries of all kinds within the state it treats. Each volume has prefatory and introductory material, a table of county creations, a consolidated chronology, and--the bulk of the work--individual county chronologies. A table of censuses and census outline maps add the finishing touch. It's easy to see why this 40-volume project has been supported by National Endowment for the Humanities grant money and has The Newberry Library in Chicago as its headquarters; the amount of original research from primary sources must have been staggering, and the detail is just what patrons request--month, day, and year of events whenever possible; area in square miles; and so on. The volumes in this project are intended as revised and enlarged editions of the Historical Atlas and Chronology of County Boundaries, 1788-1980 (G.K. Hall, 1984). For libraries serving historians, genealogists, geographers, and just about anyone else.

From Booklist
One of a projected 40-volume series detailing all U.S. county boundary changes from colonial times through 1990, the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries: New York is part of what promises to be a landmark work that should prove valuable to historians, genealogists, geographers, and political scientists. It is a revised and enlarged version of the five-volume Historical Atlas and Chronology of County Boundaries, 1788-1980 (G. K. Hall, 1984), also edited by Long, which covered 14 eastern and central states. The current work is also more comprehensive than the Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses, 1790-1920 (Genealogical Publishing, 1987). The range of dates is broader, and the maps are more detailed.
A table of dates of New York county creations; a table of colonial, state, and federal censuses of New York; a collection of census outline maps; and a consolidated chronology of state and county boundaries supplement the main section of the book: the 300 individual county maps. The consolidated chronology places in a single list all boundary changes and related historical events. From this chronology, where multiple county changes may be noted on a single day, the user can proceed to the series of individual county maps for the necessary detail. For example, "26 June 1781" in the consolidated chronology reads that, in an attempt to annex part of New York, Vermont expanded its Bennington County to overlap part of Albany County (New York), and its Rutland County to overlap part of Washington County (New York). Maps for both counties include these unsuccessful attempts.
Derived from the U.S. Geological Survey's State Base series (1:500,000), the maps include significant detail: cities, lakes, rivers, mountains, and, sometimes, federal land survey lines. The historical county boundaries are drawn over the current map in bold black lines. This technique provides a sharp contrast between historical and current data.
Libraries responding to historical and genealogical questions will want at least the series volume for their own state. Also available currently are volumes for Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island; New Hampshire and Vermont; and Mississippi. Academic and research collections in U.S. history, geography, political science, and genealogy should include the entire series.
