Good to use for tutoring

This was my son's school textbook, but when he didn't have a math teacher for a year, I bought it to use over the summer. It is much better than Algebra for Dummies and books like that. Even if you're good at math, it helps to read their approach to teaching the subject. It's in color, has lots of problems, about half with answers, and extras like how to do things in excel! I'm keeping it for myself now that my son has moved on and I'm very happy our school system is using this series of math books.

Excellent book that is not common core

We're using this book for our 5th grade son. We wanted a traditional nuts and bolts real algebra prep class to supplement the common core curriculum which doesn't introduce a single variable until 7th grade. While the later chapters cover material usually in high school, the earlier sections are very doable for math-proficient 4th graders. We plan to work through the book with a tutor and finish most of the sections by 7th grade. The presentation is very clear and there are a plethora of exercises. The cover has a great picture of the Golden Gate Bridge but otherwise, it's very usable anywhere.

A dreadful book

This book is just awful. It mixes up ideas, dumps advanced concepts in the same section as basic ones, and is almost guaranteed to confuse students.
Chapter 2 has students solving equations for x AND inequalities for x. The problems range from basic to advanced --- all in the same chapter (and sometimes in the same section). The highly respected Algebra 1 books written by Dolciani and Brown take THREE CHAPTERS to develop these ideas --- see Algebra: Structure and Method, Book 1. Chapter 4 introduces scientific notation (usually left until Algebra 2), and dumps difficult concepts into a steaming pile of methods to be memorized and regurgitated.
Sure, the kids may be able to memorize this stuff and pass tests, but it seems extremely unlikely (or impossible) that anyone will come away from a course using this book and actually understand the material. Books like this one are why the Common Core was developed. Bottom line: if you want to make good use of this book, send it to a recycling center.
